If you don't know Jon Leifs well try this for starters. Didn't Mahler say of his 3rd Symphony that it had almost stopped being music and instead become the sounds of nature; well the same might be said of Leifs who conjures up unyielding craggy landscapes of rock and ice that hypnotise and fascinate the listener. Geysir builds to an awesome explosion and the two trilogies that follow are just as captivating. The disc ends with Leifs's deathbed Consolation, a grieving intermezzo, truly painful to listen to. Anyone interested in Nordic Classical must hear this stuff.
06/10/09: the more I listen to Geysir, the more I feel its inspirational power, the originality of its slow dark stirrings before the stupendous clamour of brass and bells at its climax. Such an awesome start to an anthology, but to conclude with music such as that found in Consolation is truly special. Imagine everything Mahler said in the adagios from Symphonies 9 & 10 being expressed with devastating candour by Leifs in a mere seven minutes for string orchestra. Oh, what I would give to hear this in a live performance. Devastatingly poetic and emotional music without a trace of sentimentality.
YOU MUST HEAR THIS, if you have any love of music for strings.
