This collection reflects Stan at his most sensuous, whether it be his 'bossa nova' pieces which propelled him to mainstream fame (and record sales) in the sixties, to experiments with strings, or simply with his honeyed tones at the centre of a quartet/quintet.

Bossa nova is well represented here, from 'Corcovado' to his iconic 'Girl from Ipanema, and string pieces such as the silky 'Moonlight in Vermont', or 'Alfie'. Perhaps the cream of this collection (for me at least), lies in the small group pieces with legendary figures such as Bill Evans ('Melinda' & 'But Beautiful'), Gary Burton ('Here's that Rainy Day' & 'Little Girl Blue'), and Oscar Peterson and Herb Ellis ('I'm Glad there is You').

The interplay between the musicians, especially on the small group pieces, is a thing of real beauty, and the warmth and depth of the sound really contributes to this rich collection of late night jazz at its most romantically sumptuous. There are no strident or jagged notes here, just some blissfully haunting, soothing melodies.

If you're new to jazz, or Getz, this is probably the gentlest introduction around; if you enjoy this his other sessions are well worth investigating, perhaps starting with his 'Lost Sessions' Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions and his final concerts at the Cafe Monmartre Caf? Montmartre, as these are closest to the rich ballad feel which Stan made his own.

Reasonable background notes and modest price make this well worth investigating (check it out on Amazon sampler). Why then only 4 stars?

Great CD to enjoy when you need to relax. Most of these tracks have a magic within.

Why only 4 stars you ask? The jazz borders with the easy listening here and that kind of stopped me from giving 5 stars.

In any case: buy with confidence, it will not disappoint you.

Don't usually buy modern jazz CDs, but just loved this .. great for background music or to listen alone, maybe with a glass of wine, or two!
