Product Description

A young FBI star (Leon) is sent to hunt down a most dangerous man - a terrifying legend hated and feared by both the law and the criminal underworld alike. A man called Big Ugly.

Leon and Big Ugly engage in an epic struggle, but unlike the poor souls before him, Leon lives...barely. Big Ugly disappears like a ghost leaving Leon a broken man with only a scrambled head full of bad memories.

Years later, a degenerate criminal stumbles upon Big Ugly's hidden compound. A raving band of nasty individuals are assembled. Leon gets the call to go undercover and join this team of psychopaths to ensure Big Ugly is brought to justice...but nothing is what it seems.

A breakneck pulp action thriller, GETTING UGLY will twist your head like a pretzel leaving you struggling to guess what happens next, but so much fun you won't want it to end.

150-odd pages………fast, funny, furious and frantic, filled with fantastic fights and frenetic f… err fornication (ok just a bit of the latter then).

Enjoyable, exciting, exhilarating! Not a book you would foist on your granny for her birthday unless of course she likes a bit of wild and a touch of weird. Quite filmic – reminded me of the film, Tropic Thunder……but that might just be me.

FBI, crims, guns, death, loss, humiliation, vengeance, redemption, knives and double-D’s all feature along with a large sex-aid!

An intriguing lead character, well written action scenes, explosive throughout. Happy days!

If you like your crime fiction classic, Golden Age or a touch literary this probably won’t appeal to you. If conversely you want a fun few hours and some action packed escapism, you could do a hell of a lot worse.

The author has a second title available – Remo Went Rogue, which I will be enjoying soon.

4 from 5

My thanks to the author for my copy of this one.

Hat-tip to author Paul D. Brazill for bringing another under the radar author to my attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not so Ugly 26 Mar 2013
By Michael Monson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I just finished Getting Ugly, the just now published new novella from Mike McCrary.

I must say that after just a little bit of difficulty at the beginning sorting out characters and plot direction, the book became a relentlessly enjoyable read that I could and did not put down until the ending sentence.

Now, Getting Ugly is unusual. It's not really about character or even about a main character (though one particular x-FBI agent comes closest to being the protagonist). And, the plot is not particularly complicated. No this book is about Getting Ugly, or getting this really bad guy named, "The Big Ugly."

That is really it. McCrary gives us a lot of really good examples of what a horrible, criminal, cruel and dangerous guy Big Ugly is and why a large amount of people both in the gangster and the government/police world want to get to him and his treasure and then it is .... on.

The gangster war lords and the some corrupt federal and local undercover law enforcement officers assemble a crew of professional soldiers and assassins, then go to Big Ugly's lair and then there is a long long battle with much death and destruction and a clever ending.

So basically the book is a short set up and then a long siege and battle.

And very fun to read.

The writing crackles and the action sequences are beautifully written. McCrary introduces some fascinating original characters in his assassin's army, especially a madly in love male/female team of homicidal maniacs.

Mccrary's got skills. You can't stop reading but also fear for what may happen next to the characters. Definitely sense a homage to Tarantino. Refreshing and witty!

4.0 out of 5 stars hard to put down 12 July 2013

I loved the saying in Kreyol! The story line and plot great. I wanted to give it 5 stars but one several occasions I couldn't find the transition from Liberte's first night, location and aunt. Having to re-read a chapter thinking I had mis-read or read it too fast missing a paragraph initially was frustrating but once you are accustomed to the authors style of writing its just keep reading he makes it clear down the road.
I would recommend this book to friends, family and considering a possible "suggested reading list" for a 9th grade & above for the cultural information/ insight into life in Haiti and surrounding islands. From a child's point of view. I have grands reading it but must say some language may be offensive thus the maturity of the child must be considered. If your highly sensitive on religion not open to other forms of worship this book tells a story of a place at a time when a murder occurred and the events that followed. I loved all the characters. If edited suggestion...make it clear Liberte's age! Clarify timeframe
.is it one night or 3 wks. How long between leaving home and new clothes from aunt

I knew this guy was funny because I follow him on Twitter. Getting Ugly did not disappoint and surprised the heck out of me at the end. Looking forward to the next one Mr. McCrary.

This book was a too graphic for me and I didn't really finish it because of the gore. I do not recommend it.
