Perfect for beginners interested in learning how to develop games, this book shows them how to create games using Game Maker Pro and the Game Maker Language. Requiring no prior programming skills, the Game Maker interface has drag-and-drop functionality and the Game Maker Language is built right in. The game development and programming fundamentals learned can be applied to other programming languages, and provide a solid programming foundation for budding game developers. Hands-on projects help reinforce new skills as different game types are created throughout the book.

Before I begin, I have to confess, I only bought this book as a time-filler waiting for the 'Game Maker's Companion' to be released. I hoped it would provide a couple of 'classic' projects for me to mess round while I waited, and maybe I could still learn a thing or two. However, as I was soon to discover, this book is full of errors which I fear would leave a beginner stumped.
The first few chapters aren't too bad - kind of a whistle-stop tour of the Game Maker IDE - although I'm sure the book would benefit more from introducing the features whilst working towards a finished game. I found these chapters to be quite repetative to be honest, but I suppose a beginner might appreciate this. And some of the tables of actions provide a handy reference, so I was prepared to persevere.
But when the book gets down to business and you actually start working on a program, the quality of the book plummets dramatically.
Firstly, there is little in the way of explanation - just a list of instructions for you to parrot. Rinse and repeat kind of stuff.
Secondly, many of the instructions are just plain wrong. The author doesn't seem to know the difference between left and right, up and down, and horizontal and vertical. Bizzarely, you are asked to create resources which then aren't used (Chapter 4). At one point, you are expected to fill a room full of objects which you don't actually define until the next section! (Chapter 5) Similarly, you're also asked to set up collision events for these yet-to-be-created objects. Again, a reasonably experienced user might spot this and work around it, but I feel that a beginner would be left feeling completely lost.
Lastly, the quality of the graphics which you are expected to download are abysmal.... Sure, they serve their purpose, but the finished projects just look embarrasing to say the least. If you're a creative type I guess you could produce your own art - but should you have to?
If you're new to Game Maker and you're trying to decide which beginner's book to buy - leave this one for now and get yourself the Game Maker's Apprentice. When you've got a bit more experience, maybe you could challenge yourself by correcting and improving all the games in this book!Read more ›
A++ product, if you are into gaming but don't know how to make them this book will show you all kinds of tutorials and helpful tips to help you get started off with Game Maker. Would recommend this to anyone that wants to get started in the gaming world!!
With the few Game Maker books that are available, this one actually touches on the Game Maker Language ( GML ). You have the introduction to the program itself with some nice tables explaining the Drag and Drop actions and princibles of use. There is no CD with this book, but you are able to download some of the examples from the website mentioned within and on the back of the book. All that is needed now, is a book that will bring some useful ideas and routines for beginners and more experienced users alike. If it touches on both Drag and Drop with GML alongside, I am sure it will be a winner !
