This unique practical reference offers step-by-step help in tackling graffiti. Common target locations are described, and the importance of identifying and understanding the nature of the surface before selecting the appropriate Graffiti Removal Method is emphasised.
Protecting surfaces against graffiti attack is an increasingly attractive option, due to the effectiveness of modern chemical systems and the economic benefits of the approach, but selection of suitable materials and methods is essential. The book deals with the subject thoroughly.
The spread of graffiti owes much to the development of new forms of aerosol and felt-tip markers. Solvents and other chemical systems have been developed to deal with these, but many of them need careful handling and use to avoid causing hazards to operatives. Getting Rid of Graffiti lays special emphasis on safe working practices to minimise risk and takes account of current UK Health and Safety at Work and COSHH legislation. Addresses of relevant sources of information and specialist materials and equipment are given in an appendix.
The whole book is based on the first hand experience of London Underground Ltd in research and development into graffiti materials and protective coatings, methods and equipment, site trials, training of staff and development of the Graffiti Removal Methods.

A practical guide to the removal of graffitti should stick to being a practical guide to the removal of graffitti, and be presented like a workmans manual, not a book that might be significant culturally. If what you want this book for is to remove graffitti then you won't be interested in its uninformed token comments about art and cultural history. Whitford compares graffitti artists to cavemen and misquotes one of the 80's most tragic and exciting art heroes names (Jean MICHEL Basquiet, not jean paul) within the first few pages. This subject is dry, and based on the premise that all graffiti is a pest, obviously. Who is the audience? Council employees? Janitors? It is contradictory to the point of the guide to present a culturally educated point of view as an introduction.
