This was the first book I read by Chrissie Manby but it won't be the last!!

It was brilliant from start to finish and I could not put it down. There were moments that anyone with a bad break up could relate to and at times you couldn't help but cringe for the lead character. The storyline was believable the whole way through displaying the impact that a breakup can have on anyone resulting in strained other relationships.

If you love to laught out loud while you're reading I'd buy this now.

I remember a time when 'Chrissie' Manby was just plain old 'Chris' and her books were part of the original 'chicklit' genre that first became popular in the late 90s/early 2000s. And they were good. Sadly, with the name change seems to have come a whole new level of literary low for Chrissie and her main character in 'Getting Over Mr Right'.

Ashleigh is 32 and hopelessly in love with Michael, a wholly unappealing person who makes Simon Cowell seem like a safe bet in the marriage stakes. So when Michael dumps Ashleigh for a Brazilian interior designer - doing so through the wonderfully modern relationship wrecker that is Facebook - Ashleigh is inconsolable. From denial and begging, to casual withcraft and self-help groups, Ashleigh tries everything she can think of to win Michael back... with pretty much no success at all.

The main issue I have with this book lies with Ashleigh herself. Put simply, she's horrible and not someone who I had the slightest feelings of sympathy for. She treats her friends appallingly, uses her parents for her own desperate ends, ruins her best friend's wedding for apparently no reason, and uses her 'heartbreak' as the sole excuse for basically behaving like a thoroughly spoilt brat. But rather than get her comeuppance, Manby allows her to fall on her feet with a cushy job (after losing her original one via a particularly ridiculous premise involving a PowerPoint presention) which involves her getting lots of money and in the process a new flat and car. And everyone forgives her for her frankly unforgiveable behaviour. The ending is inevitable and wraps up everything far too nicely and to top it off, we're even provided with some of Manby's own dating tips for finding the 'perfect man'.

I have just finished listening to the audible version of Getting over Mr Right and realised that it's almost 1am. Despite the fact that I'm well above the intended age group for this book I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favourite bit has to be the mystic cat episode which made me laugh out loud. The writing makes you really feel for the character and cry along with her misery. The audible version is excellent, the narrator Karen Cass is easy to listen to and brings out the emotions of the book. I would recommend this book in either format.

When I got this book I knew it would be quite different to my normal reading material, as I normally like a good old romantic novel (very mushy, I know) but this offered something different for me as it was about getting over someone rather than falling in love with them... So I guess you could say I was broadening my horizons...
Turns out, though, I wish I'd never bothered! This story is about a pathetically weak girl who goes crazy and makes all sorts of toe-curlingly cringey decisions to get her "mr. right" back. Throughout the book I couldn't help but get irritated at the main character Ashleigh who was so annoyingly feeble, that I had to stop myself from shouting out loud as she made loads of stupid decisions. The book I felt, was made worse by the fact the other characters in the story were practically non-existent while the one character we did know about (Ashleigh) was so unlikeable. This book wasn't all bad though, there were some funny bits and the ending was okay.... but overall I wouldn't recommend it as I think a book that causes you so much exasperation is not worth the read!

Chrissie Manby has created a character who is both likeable and relatable whilst addressing the issue of being dumped by the person you thought you were going to spend your life with and the process which you go through on the road back to being ok. I loved this book as I could relate, and yet still gawp at Ashleigh's antics.

This book was laugh out loud funny, relatable and also has the warmth which not many books contain any more.

A definate recommendation.

I found this one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while. There were parts when I laughed, parts when I cringed at what she was planning to do, but overall I could not put it down. I think anyone who's been through a breakup could see herself in it. Well written and entertaining, it's a thoroughly enjoyable read and I think perhaps the best by this author yet.

I won't deny that this is yet another fun-packed, hilarious and well-crafted page turner from Chris Manby! As ever I was hooked and laughing until the end. However, the ONLY reason I am giving this book a 4 star and not 5 star review is because of that AWFUL toe-curling section at the end where the author tells us all about her new love and gives us a list of points to follow so that we do not fall into common pitfalls and so that we too can find true love as she has. I am sure it wasn't her intention but this section just sounded patronising, smug and, I'm guessing, quite humiliating for those who has not yet found that elusive true love due to making all those supposed mistakes! Ms. Manby if I wanted a self-help manual I would have bought one, and one written by a professional therapist too! Stick to the fabulous ficition and let me love you once again!
