Product Description

Publisher's Weekly

'Had Maxted published this sharp, witty tale of a British woman's love life and real life before the Bridget Jones phenomenon, Fielding's novel might have been noted as a pale comparison.'

This is one of the most true to life books I have ever read. It's funny, sad, bitter, sarcastic, sometimes annoying, sometimes scary, just like life itself - a very honest description of life. I cannot believe this book is seriously being compared to Bridget Jones (which I enjoyed for the "fun" factor, but did not think was great literature) - this is so much more complex and poignant. Helen's relationships with everyone from Fatboy to her mother to her boss sound genuine. I love how each chapter starts with an anecdote that is related to the chapter's topic. To me this book was like a female version of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" - a stunningly honest description of life as a young adult trying to come to terms with the fact that you don't have all the answers. Highly recommended!

When I initially read the outline of this book I wrongly presumed that this was another amusing tale of a twenty-something bored with her career and manless (cue Bridget Jones). But I was pleasantly greeted with an excellent, touching tale of Helen - recently bereived and dealing with family and personal issues.

An excellent realistic story which really tugs at the heartstrings, as she tries to help her mother, keep her friends, find true love, and find herself in the process. It details too how the loss of a loved one can affect people, and also the tools in an effort to "come to terms" with it. I wish I had had this book to hand for my mum, who lost her mother a few years ago and could not deal with her grief.

Anna has an excellent descriptive nature and style to her writing which includes starting each chapter looking back and reflecting. Really entertaining to read.

Cant wait for the next book if this is the shape of things to come.

Anna Maxted's book is a joy to read.I took it on holiday with me and found myself laughing out loud at some parts and openly crying at others,(great interest from those around who didn't seem to be getting the same effect from their Jackie Collins'). At times I felt raw emotion coming from the pages. There are also some side splittingly funny scenarios in the book which made me cringe, the characters were believable and I liked the fact that the main character took great delight in winding (certain) people up. I highly recommend this book.I have chicken pox now and wish I hadn't read it yet as it would see me through this house arrest I feel as though I'm under!
