Book Description

22 May 2009 Getting Into Series
This guide approaches the process of application to Medical School in a realistic and logical way. It starts by helping would-be applicants decide if this is the right choice for them and whether they have a good chance of success with their application. Current medical issues that can come up in interviews are also discussed as well as how to handle interview questions. Other chapters include information on procedures for non-standard applications and what to do if made an offer. Finally, the book offers some examples of personal statements and advice from members of staff at UK medical schools. MPW Guides explain the complex procedures for getting into higher education. Written by acknowledged experts in a clear, concise format, they go beyond the official publications to give would-be students straightforward and practical advice on how to secure a place on the course of their choice.

This book is an excellent overall guide to becoming a doctor. It starts off by guiding you through the process of getting an interview with advice on what shadowing experience etc you need, how to fill in your UCAS form (including the personal statement) and which subjects to study at GCSE and A-level. It goes on to guide you through how to succeed at interview, with advice as to how best to tackle questions like "Why do you want to become a doctor?", "What makes a good doctor?" and many other common questions. There is also a chapter on how to tackle your A-levels to ensure you get the right grades and advice on what to do if you receive an offer but fail to meet the required grades or fail to get an offer but do better in your exams than expected. The book even has some advice for non-stadard applications such as mature, overseas and applicants with no science subjects.
All of this is very well covered. However, the most useful section by far is the current affairs chapter that discusses the issues of the NHS, SARs, BSE, the implications of genetic engineering, third world health, MMR and HIV/AIDS. The appendix contains a table of medical school admission policies and stats including mock interview questions.
Overall, this book is excellent. I would advise anyone applying or thinking of applying to study Medicine to buy this book. In my experience, the succeding at interview and current affairs sections cover many of the question that you are likely to encounter at interview.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good guide 23 Dec 2006
This is a good guide which I used in my application. However, to stay abreast with the recent changes in medical education (with regard to MMC in particular), its worth looking for a more recently published book also; the RSM press book "A career in medicine - do you have what it takes?" has a new edition coming out in January, and appears to have a website as well for updates [...]

This book tells you all you need to know. It gives you advice from choosing GCSE options to what the interviewers look for. It is by far the best book I've read on the subject, so I'd recommend it to anyone who is considering Medical School.

It's a really great book, and covers everything you need to know. Essential for anyone thinking of applying, but remember, the medical schools know that everyone has this book; they will change their interviews etc in places. A MUST HAVE!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative 18 Aug 2010
A good book for those who can't be bothered or haven't got time to research medical schools by themselves. It will save you a lot of time.
Just one little thing to watch out for: most of the information comes from prospectuses sent by medical schools and it is a fact that some med schools change their position after the prospectus has been printed. For example some will have changed grade requirements or even the course structure. So once you have a clear idea of what you are aiming for it may be a good idea to cross reference then information with the website of the schools in question so that you always have the most up to date information.

3.0 out of 5 stars An odd book. Good in parts. Puzzling in others 19 Jun 2010
THis is a good book for an introduction to how to approach medical school applications if you know nothing about it. However it has this curious "Current issues" section which (i) is not that current and (ii) has nothing to do with the basics of the medical application process. It is just about relevant for the interview process (though since when has HIV been a hot topic? Not for the past few years!), but the book does not say much about interviews themselves. Apart from this confusion the book is alright..
