"Getting to Heaven" examines our Earthly life--conscious human choices--Biblical direction--"Jesus' departing instructions"--"the climax of [Christ's] teaching." Don Piper and Cecil Murphey again co-author for this new fourth book. It is more about witness and life-purpose than about Piper's 1989 death-back-to-life auto accident ("90 Minutes in Heaven"). Because that accident and recovery was such a determining point in the author's life, he frequently draws from it to make points in "Getting to Heaven." Piper's 90 Heaven minutes has definitely given him insight. He never discounts the struggles, pain, and spiritual strife he faced in the months and years after returning from Heaven. He suffered as a normal human.
In the authors' distinctive, honest, but not in-your-face-religion style of writing, this book tries to point out the path of preparedness for Heaven. There is enough scripture to validate issues but it is not a Bible study. It's more. Not a devotional--more. Not a fictional story--but the more is truth from numerous antidotes of both authors, stories of others discovered through their ministries and lives, and gospel stories. Experiences are used to teach. The more comprising this book provides inspiration as well as discipleship.
Use "Getting to Heaven" as a study rather than an evangelistic tool. It's for believers who struggle or question. Its 29 quick chapters could easily serve as a daily devotion over a month's period. All chapters end with questions and thought provoking departing instructions. Try reading chapter 29 first and again after reading all the chapters.
"Nobody wanders into Heaven," says the book, as it gives suggestions on how to trust God in chaos prior to getting to Heaven. It suggests that all earthly life is a second chance to get ready. No better place to look for guidance, as presented by the authors', than Christ's final directives and prayer to the disciples. That is this book's basic concept.
This is an inspirational Christian's challenge to service and witnessing.
Another Don Piper (& Cec) book which offers HOPE for those in grief, loss, illness, and despair.
