Product Description

Review

"... clearly written, from a wealth of practical experience, and does indeed provide the sufferer with a 'survival kit' on the road to recovery. It can be recommended not only to sufferers, but to professionals dealing with these patients, and to family and friends who wish to become involved in the recovery process." - Anne Ward, Behaviour Research Therapy

"... an excellent book, and a model for self-help manuals. The basics of bulimia nervosa and other binge eating disorders are explained in clear and simple language." - Padma de Silva, Sexual and Marital Therapy

Product Description

Easy to read and illustrated with many real-life examples, this book addresses the specific problems faced on a daily basis by bulimia sufferers.

The only self-help programme that has been evaluated in a randomised controlled trial, it provides detailed step-by-step advice for dealing with this condition.

Unlike other less problem-oriented books currently available on the subject, this book concentrates on the key behaviour changes necessary for the sufferer to achieve a happier and more fulfilled life. Theory is closely interwoven with practice and the book draws together real problems and solutions experienced by hundreds of sufferers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant if you are serious about recovery. 22 Jan 2001

Format:Paperback
I am in recovery from bulimia and have used this book in my therapy sessions. It is very realistic but you have to be prepared to work hard and refer back to it often if you want to see results.I have had bulimia for 11 years and have tried many other self help books, this is the only one that has helped because it does not just focus on eating problems but also on psychological and life issues. However,it does work much better in the context of therapy or with a close friend who can help you through as the book itself recommends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 15 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book is easy to follow. You can either read it all in one go or dip into whenever you feel like it. I would suggest it to everyone who is trying to get help for an eating disorder and (as in my case) those who have received the help and are tentatively trying life out without the support of a counsellor anymore. It provides that bit of support when you're feeling wobbily and helps you to continue to move forward with the confidence that you aren't alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting better bit(e) by bit(e) 29 July 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is likely to be helpful to highly motivated people who have bulimia nervosa or a binge eating disorder and who are looking for an aid to help with changing their behaviour and to offer step by step advice. The book gives detailed information and various "tools" to help the sufferer to take control of their eating disorder.

Whilst the book is clearly written; easy to understand and gives a great deal of information and advice regarding binge eating disorders, I think it would be unlikely to help anyone unless they are either highly motivated or are using the book in addition to counselling or psychotherapy.

The book makes clear that it is not aimed towards helping to understand why the eating disorder developed, however, I feel it would have been helpful to have included more information regarding causes within the snippets of real life examples that are given. For this reason, whilst I found the book interesting it left me with a feeling that something important was missing.

I don't really have very much to say about this book but as it relatively few reviews I thought I would add a quick note for anyone looking through the available manuals on bulimia nervosa.

I actually read this in it's entirety in a few hours back in November and then kept it open to dip in and out of as I felt the need. I found it useful but more as a one off read rather than a recovery guide.

However, I would recommend this but maybe for people who have never been in therapy before and need a starting point; if you already have a good level of awareness around your own behaviours/symptoms and your triggers I don't think this would be all that beneficial. It could also be a good guide for for friends and family members. Personally, I didn't find any new information and I wasn't using any of the suggestions or activities (and those that I am doing, I was doing before this book arrived) so I finally decided to have one last read through and retire it.

As a side note, I started this book alongside another manual (Bulimia Nervosa: A Cognitive Therapy Programme for Clients) which I am slowly working through. In contrast to this book I am finding it challenging and much more constructive, especially in conjunction with therapy, and I would highly recommend it

As far as self-help books go, this is pretty good. Of course the book is only effective if the sufferer is actually ready for help, a fact which is acknowledged by it's authors.(Of course this can be said of any self-help book). There are some interesting tasks in it which I made an attempt to undertake and one or two of these tasks even made me think and assess my behavior a little. The book is written in a relatively up-beat way wich had me momentarily charged up and ready to beat this thing. However, this is not the type of book that you can read and then discard, you nearly need to carry it around with you, dipping in to it now and then to keep up the momentum. There is a lot of case studies which new-comers to the illness may find helpful for identifying with. Personally speaking it really is a case of 'been there done that' and this book will join the dozens of similar books on my bookcase. Please note that this is a result of chronic bulimia rather than any shortcomings with the book. Sadly, there are no miracles out there for a problem such as this but if you have suffered for a relatively short period of time, this might just save the day. If you have suffered bulimia for several years, I doubt that any book can realistically change anything.

Excellent, readable guide. A bit overwhelming in the amount of information given but if you can put it into practice it would be very helpful.
