For today’s photographer, a clean, professional-looking website is a must. But for most, the thought of having a site that displays your work like a pro seems either too expensive or too hard to create. How can you develop an eye-catching website that looks professional, updates quickly, and even helps you make some money in the process when your passion is photography and not coding? It’s easier than you think.

In Get Your Photography on the Web, RC Concepcion, curriculum developer for Kelby Media Group and one of the Photoshop Guys, takes you through an easy step-by-step process so you can build your own site from the ground up and have it look like you paid someone a lot of money to do it for you. Even if you know nothing about Web programming, this book will have you building a website in hours, not weeks.

You’ll learn:
  • How to secure your own domain names and hosting space
  • How to install WordPress on your website in as little as seven clicks
  • How to add pictures, galleries, and Flash portfolios without learning any code How to sell your images online without having to make a single print
  • How to incorporate Lightroom and Flash galleries into an already existing website

You’ll also find interviews and inspirational tips from people you will meet “Along the Way” to making your website. Plus, RC gives you free templates and Flash portfolio components to get you up and running without emptying your wallet.

The techniques RC shares in Get Your Photography on the Web are the very same ones he uses for some of the biggest names in photography—it’s like designing your website with a trusted expert looking over your shoulder. Best of all, you’ll walk away with the satisfaction of knowing that you did it all yourself!

Now that I have created my own website, I can tell ya: doing it is NOT rocket science! but you still need advice and guidance of some kind if you're starting from scratch. If you already now how to do that, then congrats! this book is not for you, although you may still learn quite a few tips from it.
RC Concepción gives us a step-by-step process, clearly written (even for someone like me, whose native language is not english) and very easy to follow. I've got the physical book, so I dont have the image quality issue I've read in the other review. With a lot of images, many of them screen captures, it does a great job. Highly recommended.

This book was manna from heaven to me when I stumbled across it on Amazon. I'd already set up a domain name using Go Daddy, but had no idea what to do with it. I was going to buy a template from one of the various photography website companies, but a friend recommended using Wordpress, and lo and behold, this book tells you how to to that, starting off with a Go Daddy domain name.

What I like about this book is that RC really holds your hand. He assumes you're a photographer who finds it a bit of a pain in the butt to have to build a website and have diddly squat knowledge of anything webby. Well if that's you (that's me all right), then this book is for you. I really don't know one end of a computer from another, but my website is up and running and it didn't take me that long to figure it out. I've even uploaded folders using ftp (yeah, exactly)- no idea what I'm doing really but again he holds your hand through the whole process and the screen grabs are really helpful for checking you've got the right boxes ticked.

I've got a couple of gripes. The first is it's an American book so he assumes the readership is American too. This doesn't really matter except for the chapter on printing when he recommends using two American printers - not much good for us this side of the Pond.

The second is actually the more important and the reason why I didn't give his book five stars. When he talks about uploading a gallery of images he says "In a later chapter, I'll show you how to take this gallery functionality and make it look awesome!" Unfortunately, the later chapter is all about flash. Now, no photographer with half an ounce of common sense would surely be using flash for their website, now that so many are viewed on ipads and smartphones? And unfortunately he doesn't really give any alternatives. I'm assuming the book was written a couple of years ago before ipads and smartphones had become the almost ubiquitous phenomena they are, which is why I'd like an update. Of course if the good people at Apple decide to enable flash on their devices then this chapter will be useful again.

He also doesn't say much about comments on wordpress. I'd have liked a better explanation of how these work.

Now if you're reading this and thinking what sort of an idiot doesn't understand basic stuff like ftp, then this book is probably not for you. However, if you're nodding along sagely and thinking "that's me", then it's money well spent.

I like this book. Over the years I have tried to do my own website, have employed people to do it and bough loads of books and software including Dreamweaver to do one for myself. Problem is if you but one off the shelf its too basic and generally rubbish, if you employ someone to do it, I have found they don;t like giving you access to upgrade or revise it and I have never had the time to learn HTML. Good old RC comes along with a book which explains who to buy a website name and address for your website and how to download the right web software to get it up and running in a few hours or so for a basic start. you can add to it as and win and the more you delve into the book the more you learn.

Easiest and cheapest way to get a website. I am hooked.
