The Best Self-Help Book Yet?,
By Andrew Grey (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Paperback)
This is a breakthrough self-help book. Feel like you've heard it all before, or simply that nothing seems to have worked, then this book could be for you.
The book is based on a new and arguably revolutionary psychological therapy named Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which has a emerging good quality research base for a range of difficulties including depression, stress and burnout, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, smoking cessation, chronic pain, and psychosis. If you buy this book and want to get the most out it, I'd strongly recommend engaging fully in the exercises it suggests. It has the potential to radically change the way you think about yourself, your relationships and the way you see your world. It is a deeply compassionate, very cleverly written book, and you may be surprised to find in places that it even manages to predict what you mind has to say. In addition to being an immensely valuable self-help resource, the book is also a great way of 'getting into' ACT for practitioners trying wanting to learn more about this therapy. As a practitioner, engaging fully with the book could provide you with a deeper understanding of the therapy experientially and theoretically. It's an excellent teaching resource and indeed has recently been used as a learning resource for therapists on the UK ACT listserve group. I should add that the book is not for the faint heated, and is not necessarily a quick fix. It will confront you with your pain, and help you look deeply toward what you most value. At times it may seem not to make sense logically and may leave you feeling conceptually and emotionally confused. If this happens, stick with the book - the confusion may well be opening you up to new possibilities. In summary, this is a ground breaking, theoretically informed, evidence-based self-help resource that could help you overcome your suffering and engage more fully with your life. I would highly recommend it. A word of caution: If you have severe mental health difficulties, I would encourage you to first discus the book with an accredited mental health professional (e.g. psychologist, counselor) before using it.

Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life,
By
This review is from: Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Paperback)
"Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life", one of several SELF-HELP books I have read this year, and the title of the book could not describe its contents any better.!
This book goes a step further than Good authors like "Louise Hays" self-help books and "Susan Jeffers" self-help Series, because you will be automatically become engrossed, even by the 1st 3-5 pages in this book, on the grounds you have an open mind, and you are not a negative person... Only those who are motivated to move on, or desperate to get out off their current circumstances will be ready, and this book is both light reading and very down-to-earth Practical medication for the soul. I'm not going to repeat what others who rate this book very highly have already said. All I wish to say this book has been a tremendous help to me, and works better than anything a "Shrink or a GP" can give you in the form of a Pill... Please, AVOID Pills (only if you can), but not an necessity, I as a result of recovering from Severe Depression and PTSD, I can speak with some authority and conviction on the subject.. The Shrink or GP can only do so much "the rest is down to you", also buy some "relaxing music and meditation CDs" here on Amazon, for after every 60 min reading session, which I personally recommend. (don't over do it)... (don't take on to much at anyone time)... Im sure your Adult enough to know whats best for you anyway. - thanks for reading. If you think my review was at all helpful, I would be grateful if you would kindly CLICK Yes,! - cheers, David.

Personal Change: You get out what you put in!,
By Hedgehog (West Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Get Out of Your Mind and into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Paperback)
I am sorry that the previous reviewer did not find this book helpful, however in my view
the book conveys ideas and concepts that are potent if put into pactice, ideally a book for people whom have decided that they want to make psychological changes or are curious about other ways of making powerful psychological change when they have tried other therapies and these have not succeeded. If you find yourself nodding in agreement with the literal treasure chest of ideas (that are clearly explained in a succinct and logical manner often using metaphors and examples) and then put into practice the many excersises dotted throughout the book then I am sure your time and effort will most likely be rewarded, not only with personal change but also a shift in ones perspective on the human condition. Quick fix it is not though - the techniques need practice and time, but results can be noticed fairly rapidly. In my opinion (as a practising Cognitive Therapist working in the NHS), the book suggests that there is a potential 'thinking trap' inside all of us that convinces us that thinking our way through our human problems of mental suffering or avoiding our distress is the best way to free yourself from it. Ultimately this book trains the reader to recognise how such attempts escape are false refuge and actually do get us meshed further into our torment. This works a bit like struggling to get out of quicksand. The way to get out of quicksand is to stop struggling and in this books case this means learning to practice dynamic acceptance of distress and other ways of defusing . There is a buzz in the Psychology world about these techniques as research is proving that the techniques are often particularly effective. There is evidence that they can help with anxiety disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Depression and addictions I believe. The theories and ideas behind the book are truly grounded in scientific approach and also share ideas with mindfulness that has proved itself as a powerful agent of personal change for thousands of years. The book is a personal investment if used well.
