Product Description

Product Description

For lovers of soulful organ workouts and gritty R&B guitars, Ace is proud to present the first-ever collection dedicated to central California’s original funk brothers, the Merced Blue Notes (named after their hometown of Merced, California). The Blue Notes never had tangible record success, though records such as ‘Whole Lotta Nothing’, ‘Bad Bad Whiskey’ and ‘Rufus’ were jukebox and airplay hits, the latter record so popular in Detroit that the band journeyed there in 1963 to record for the Tri-Phi label. However, mention their name to any teenager who grew up in California’s San Joaquin Valley – including filmmaker George Lucas – and find out how they were the band to hear in that region in the early to mid 1960s, packing ballrooms up and down Highway 99 from Sacramento to Fresno with their rocking, insistent grooves. The Blue Notes had a unique R&B sound that, while drawing superficial comparison to Booker T & The MGs and Freddy King, has a pulsating, indefinable energy. They reached their peak when signed to the Galaxy label in 1965, from which era most of Get Your Kicks On Route 99 is drawn. As well as the downhome proto-funk sound of their Galaxy instrumentals like ‘Bad Bad Whiskey’ and ‘Mama Rufus’, we are also treated to groovy vocal numbers like ‘Too Much and ‘Soul Sister’. This compilation includes virtually all of the Merced Blue Notes’ singles 1961-65, today sought-after items in both the R&B and mod collector circles. It also features many quality unissued instrumental and vocal sides drawn from the Galaxy vaults, all of which display the trademark Blue Notes sound. With copious notes and illustrations from the band’s own archives, Get Your Kicks On Route 99 is a definitive history of one of vintage R&B’s best kept secrets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection 19 Nov 2004

This CD represents the best works of the Merced Blue Notes. It is a slice of history that truly represents the music of the "American Graffiti" era. This band performed in the same area of California and during the same time period as depicted in the movie American Graffiti. From the ruff-edged, driving "Whole Lotta Nothing", to the polished, commercial "Bad, Bad Whiskey", this is the sound of the early 60's that central California danced to on Saturday nights. Highly recommended, not as great commercial work, but as a true picture of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you weren't there you'll never know 5 Nov 2006
By Glenn D. Gallup - Published on Amazon.com

I grew up in Stockton in the late 50's when the "Notes" were our band of record in the Central Valley. Hearing this album brought back so many great memories of following the Merced Blue Notes to Tracy, Lodi, Manteca, Oakdale, and best of all the Stockton Ballroom. You can hear glimpses of how they sounded live and if you listen closely how great the musicians were. If you are a fan of late 50's, early 60's blues/rock buy this album. Listen to "Whole lot of nothin" and picture a thousand or more kids on a dance floor having the time of their lives. It's just too bad no one recorded them live.
