Product Description

CD Description

November 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the recording of the Rolling Stones concerts at Madison Square Garden that yielded the epochal Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!, the band’s definitive live album. This 40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set comprises three audio CDs including a remastered disc of the original Ya-Ya’s repertoire as well as a disc of five previously unreleased Stones tracks recorded at the same Madison Square Garden shows. The third CD encompasses unreleased performances by the shows’ support acts: B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner, five songs from the former and seven songs from the latter. The box set also includes a 56 page Collectors Edition book featuring photos and an essay by Ethan Russell, the acclaimed photographer who accompanied the Stones on the '69 tour, as well as the original Rolling Stone Magazine review by Lester Bangs and a series of recollections from a cross-section of fans who attended the concerts and a replica of the original tour poster by David Byrd. Included as well is a bonus DVD by legendary filmmakers Albert and David Maysles, also entitled Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The film includes full-length performances of the five previously unreleased Stones songs--"Prodigal Son", "You Gotta Move", "Under My Thumb", "I’m Free" and "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction". Beyond the song performances – presented in 5.1 surround sound--the film includes a sequence with Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Jack the donkey during the cover shoot for the Ya-Ya’s album and backstage tête-à-têtes between Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix and Mick Taylor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones - The Satanic Majesties at their peak, 1 Dec 2009
By Red on Black (Cardiff) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This is not so much a review as a plea for a Christmas present! Reviewing "live" albums always leads to speculation about the best concert album ever. Indeed in the case of some bands like the Grateful Dead most of their best recorded output is live so it's impossible to single out any album. But my starter for ten would be -

The Allman Brothers - Live at Filmore East
Wilco - Kicking Television
The Who - Live at Leeds
Lou Reed - Rock n Animal
Neil Young and Crazy Horse - ArcWeld
MC5 - Kick out the jams
Talking Heads - Stop making sense
Led Zeppelin - How the West was won
Bob Dylan - Live 1975- The rolling thunder revue

And of course you must add "Get yer Ya Ya's out" by the Rolling Stones. In one sense this is the daddy of them all. In his famous Rolling Stone review of the album Lester Bangs captured this in essence when he stated "where most live efforts seem almost embarrassing in their posturings and excesses, Ya-Ya's at its best just rocks and socks you right out of your chair. You can not only love it for what it is, you can like it for what it isn't."

This is the Stones at their most fierce and strutting best in that bear pit of rock n roll, New York's Madison Square Garden. The band is not so much tight as vice like and frankly the Richards Taylor pairing was always streets beyond the partnership between Keith and Ronnie. Keith's backing vocals are brilliant throughout and the rhythm section of Watts and Wyman is unimpeachable. The star of course is Jagger whose vocals are at a peak and you can almost feel the "Camp" in his performance and many funny asides during the concert. This is 1969 just before the dark shadow cast by Altamont, before the Stones were sponsored by every unethical multinational on the planet and became the most bloated corporate rock whores and before they became caricatures of themselves

Get Yer Ya Ya's Out! has rightly been given the once-over and this is a lavish package in the league of the recent Big Star anthology. It now comes with a DVD, with the album expanded to three CDs, one devoted to support acts BB King and Ike and Tina Turner.

Is it the greatest live album ever? The answer in short is that its not. The Allmans in my view can't be surpassed in this respect with Duane Allman and Richard Betts playing like they had been touched by angels, while for sheer power the Who at Leeds are like a force of nature. But as always the Stones started all this. "Get yer ya ya's out" is the sound the band that more than the Beatles defined rock music and who were clear evidence of its inherent flaws and weaknesses.

Like all Stones live albums it is has its "shouty", chug along moments. "Little Queenie" is bar band Rolling Stones and I am not particularly fond of "Live with me". But then those immortal riffs start up and that voice comes in and we have some of the greatest versions of "Midnight Rambler" "Honky Tonk Women" "Love in Vain" and "Street Fighting Man". Similarly I remain a complete pushover for that wonderful opening when the announcer introduces the "Greatest Rock n Roll band in the world" and off we go once more -

"I was born in a cross-fire hurricane
And I howled at my ma in the driving rain,
But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas!
But it's all right. I'm Jumpin' Jack Flash, It's a Gas! Gas! Gas!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Charlie's good tonight, 2 Dec 2009
By Andrew Pitchford "Andy P" (Hythe, Kent) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Sound quality is awesome espically the bonus material with an amazing version of Under My Thumb/I'm free - as usual we want more from the recorded two nights!
The BB King and Ike & Tina Turner disc offers a standard BB King set with great sound quality but what a true delight is the Ike and Tina set - just wonderful.
The DVD at around 30 minutes is an interesting if dispensible addition (you have to feel sorry for Jack the donkey stuck out on newly finished M5 in the cold and wet) but the whole box is nicely packaged, first rate sound quality, the stones billed as the greatest rock n' roll band in the world delivering a fine performance. And for once well done ABKCO!

5.0 out of 5 stars As Close As We'll Ever Get To Being There..., 6 Jan 2010
November 27th/28th, 1969. The Rolling Stones take to the stage at New York's Madison Square Garden and blow the house down with a set that drew heavily from their most recent albums, BEGGARS BANQUET and LET IT BLEED. The tapes from the shows produced certainly one of the greatest live albums ever made and, with this release, it just got even better.

The sets by B.B. King and Ike and Tina Turner got the evenings' entertainment off to great start. To me, B.B. King sounds on great form, while hearing Tina Turner sing the likes of 'Son Of A Preacher Man' and The Beatles' 'Come Together' is a real treat indeed. As for the Stones themselves, well, 'Midnight Rambler' is awesome and arguably the highlight of the original album, perhaps followed closely by a really funky 'Sympathy For The Devil'. Of the outtakes contained on disc two, I particularly enjoyed Mick and Keith doing the acoustic 'Prodigal Son' justice with a really punchy performance.

The DVD is composed of unused footage from the movie GIMME SHELTER but this is far from disposable; the rendition of 'Prodigal Son' captured here is lovely as Keith finishes the song too early which prompts a reaction of surprise from Mick! It's a lovely moment as the two share a giggle in recognition of the mistake.

Finally, the hardback book contained in the box is a nice souvenir, containing personal recollections from, among others, the photographer Ethan Russell, a reproduction of the unused sleeve design for GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! and a typically florid contemporary review of the LP from that late, great music critic Lester Bangs.

All in all, this a lovely time capsule of The Rolling Stones at a performing peak and, if you start by playing the support sets by B.B King and Tina Turner on disc three first, it's the closest you'll ever get to accurately re-living two nights of great music at the end of the 1960s.
