Review

One of this year s most striking albums --The Guardian

CD Description

Sarabeth Tucek s stunning second album is inspired by the death of her father; she calls it an impressionistic rendering of a time ruled by grief .

Get Well Soon 12 April 2011
Format:Audio CD
A sensational second album from Sarabeth Tucek, which will have listeners reaching for the kind of superlatives very few have deserved in 2011. Her smoky occasionally cracked vocal style (think 70% Cat Power, 30% Karen Dalton) is nestled in some vaguely Neil Young guitar work of both the hard and soft variety which may lead you to think this is another work of superior retro, but when everyone you care to mention is filtering their work via various genres maybe this isn't such a big sin anymore. And, hey, when a CD is this good, who cares. The big news is that Get Well Soon is up there with any of the great releases in 2011 because it packs a hell of a punch both musically and lyrically. Needless to say this will be a hugely underrated release for all sorts of reasons (not Brit school pampered for a start and a Yank woman to boot) and is unlikely to feature in any critics top tens come year end if the reviews are anything to go by, which will be a crying shame as Sarabeth Tucek is now one of the great singer songwriters out there at the moment.

A buried treasure... 22 May 2011
By CLG
Format:Audio CD
For this listener, there's too many female singer/songwriters out there with no spark and fight and well...originality. No more twee...pleeease. And as for Florence - I was the one trying to dodge the flat notes at Glastonbury last year. Bought this on the strength of a review, and my favourite buy of the year. Completely uplifting - it's like Karen Carpenter has eaten Rumer for breakfast, and morphed into Neil Young in a dress. Just fantastic. Take a punt on this if you like beautiful songs with a psych edge. Think Aimee Mann, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Evan Dando on a good day, Tori Amos on a quiet day, Elliott Smith, or the wickedly under-rated Carpenters. And she's better than Rumer. One day this will be a number one record somewhere.

Well Worth the Wait 27 May 2011
By William J. Walker VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was lucky enough to get her first album almost as soon as it came out. It became my favourite release of 2007 and has been continually revisited ever since. I was beginning to wonder if she'd disappeared altogether when I heard that she was doing a session on Six Music, I found this album and ordered it immediately. Having waited so long for the follow up, I realised I was actually a little nervous in playing it, a little fearful of it being a let down. I needn't have worried, it's superb.

I gather the reason for the delay was having a few rocky times in the intervening years but she has reunited with Jason Hiller and Luther Russell who worked on her previous album which means, despite the gap, a continuity between the albums is maintained. If you loved the first album, you will love this. Incidentally, the first album ends with an absolute corker of a track and so does this. Her voice is as good as ever, the Karen Carpenter/Karen Dalton/Cat Power comparisons stand but it's HER voice, she's not imitating anybody.

I gather a lot of the songs deal with the loss of her father when she was younger (in a boating accident) so it would be fair to say a there is a lot of darkness in the lyrics but this is in no way a depressing album. The music is just too good to leave you maudlin.

It's still early but I already feel this could be the release of the year, I only hope she gets the success to go with it she deserves.
