Reading through the question papers felt like a return to attempting the College papers again. The style of both the question posed and five following stems is well-mirrored to that of the College. The level of detailed knowledge demonstrated in this text is appropriate to the level of the Final FRCA, with occasional completely random anaesthetic or critical care facts that are often bemoaned by candidates in the real thing! There has been a niche in the marketplace for an up-to-date MCQ textbook for a number of years; previous candidates have relied on older publications with irrelevant or now defunct question bases. It is refreshing to finally see a text which addresses this problem and candidates will be gratefully for this new source of MCQ revision.

... this textbook will become one of the 'must-haves' for Final FRCA candidates. It is modernised, relevant, appropriately detailed and accurate, and left me wishing that it had been present at the time of my exam.

5 Stars: Essential aid to Final FRCA revision
It is rare to find an MCQ book for the Final FRCA, where the questions match the content and depth of knowledge demanded by the College so accurately. Get Through Final FRCA is pitched at exactly the right level, and with 450 MCQ stems, it gives candidates an ample number of questions to get their teeth into.

What sets this book apart from similar multiple choice question books are the detailed answers. These include thorough explanations and further revision material including tables and mnemonics, which are ideal to help increase your basic knowledge of an area when time is short. For more detailed revision, references are provided. An extra useful resource is the comprehensive list of up-to-date guidelines and recommendations that is included at the start of the book ... invaluable to exam preparation, especially for the SAQ and viva parts of the exam.

I would recommend this book to candidates preparing for the MCQ part of the final FRCA, for the sheer volume of questions and for the further scope for revision it provides.

Excellent MCQ book, mainly because the answers are extremely well written. The review of recent important literature at the back of the book is particularly good and saved me hours of trawling through journals.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone sitting the Final FRCA.

A succinct and comprehensive book along with fully informative and updated notes and explanations. The questions are well thought out and brilliantly framed. The ready-made list elucidating the guidelines and current evidence at the beginning is actually the highlight of the book, which will also come in handy for SOE preparation.

I would most definitely recommend this book for Final FRCA SAQ/MCQ candidates as well as those wishing to seek a list of latest guidelines.

5 Stars: A lot more than just MCQs
Get Through Final FRCA: MCQs has been well thought out and researched. The questions are relevant, up to date and varied covering both primary and final topics. The framework for the 450 questions is similar to the real deal and is therefore good practice. The answers are well written ... and references at the end of every explanation made it easier to find more information on the subject.

For me what made the book stand out from other books is the list of studies and guidelines relevant to anaesthesia at the end of the book. The fact that the authors are currently still in their rotations and fresh out of their own exam experience has really helped in creating a book that is updated, comprehensive and in sync with the exam.

I would highly recommend this book having used it myself. The explanations are detailed and often act as an opportunity to revise certain key areas required for the exam. It also improves basic knowledge. There are tables, mnemonics and scoring systems and would save the candidate time that would have been spent in looking them up with the questions. I believe it is essential reading material and a wonderful revision tool for everyone planning to take the Final FRCA exam.

I have spent the last few months practicing MCQs from several books in preparation for the final FRCA examination.
While there are a number of good books for the primary MCQs, this is not the case for the finals. It was a struggle finding a book that was both informative and relevant to today's examination format. Some had good content but were far too outdated. Many of the recent ones seemed to be a bunch of questions thrown together from handbooks and journals.
Get Through: Final FRCA: MCQs has been well thought out and researched. The questions are relevant, up to date and varied covering both primary and final topics. The framework for the 450 questions is quite similar to the real deal and is therefore good practice. The answers were well written giving me a fair idea of the subject matter. References at the end of every explanation made it easier to find more information on the subject.
For me what made the book stand out from other books is the list of studies and guidelines relevant to anaesthesia at the end of the book. There is a brief note on all the studies with references to help find the complete article.
This book has been a very useful part of my preparation for the examinations. I think the fact that the authors are currently still in their rotations and fresh out of their own exam experience has helped in creating a book that is updated, comprehensive and in sync with the exam.

I really struggled to start my revision for the final and had this book recommended to me. It is an excellent starting point as MCQs ease you into the revision mode. It's up to date, well researched and the breadth of knowledge is vast. I made notes from the answers as they are so informative.

What I also love about this book is that it includes recent big papers and summaries of the main findings. In addition I like that it includes a lot of scoring systems [which came up in the September '11 written].

Overall an awesome book to start the daunting task of final FRCA revision, and to continously refer to.

Essential companion for those about to undertake the written or the SOE 10 Sep 2011

This is an ideal reference for those preparing for both parts of the Final FRCA. The 450 MCQs are obviously well researched, and they bear a clear similarity to the style set by the College in terms of difficulty and breadth. The questions are set out in six papers (rather than by topic); this enables realistic exam-conditions practise. The answers are concise and clear, diagrams are used effectively, and each answer is backed up by a current reference. My only suggestion for improvement would be to include an index so that readers struggling with a particular topic could fast forward to relevant questions and explanations.

So while the questions and answers alone provide excellent value, the brief chapters sandwiching the exam papers are a total hidden gem: references to up to date relevant anaesthetics & ICU guidelines, and a chapter summarising the methods and results of the last decade's most important clinical trials. This is where the publication becomes most valuable to the SOE candidate: an ability to recall this information will surely set the candidate in good stead.

In summary, the authors are to be congratulated for producing an excellent text that this reviewer will use extensively in his own exam preparation and will not hesitate to recommend to colleagues preparing for the Final.
