Do memories of your grammar lessons haunt you and other textbooks overwhelm you? Then Get Started in Latin is for you. Follow a Latin story set in a medieval monastery, where conspiracy unfolds in the cloisters, Vikings threaten to attack, and young lovers set out to unmask the villains. Sample some classical Latin too, and learn more about the authors who wrote it.

Get Started in Latin is ideal for complete beginners because it introduces the language step by step through an interesting and humorous story. Each unit contains grammatical explanations and vocabulary support. There are plenty of exercises to practise each point as it is introduced and help you remember what you have learnt. There are two revision units so that you can check your progress and review areas of difficulty. 'About Latin' sections give lots of information about the history of the language and its influence upon English. 'Living Latin' sections contain pieces of authentic Latin, most of which is classical. They are included to give you an idea of what there is to enjoy once you have mastered the language and the translations are given.

The accompanying CDs are available separately or in a pack with the book. The recording contains the story and the 'Living Latin' sections of the book, and will enhance your enjoyment of the poetry and give you an idea of what Latin sounded like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Place To Start, 12 Mar 2011
This review is from: Get Started In Latin: Teach Yourself (Paperback)
This book is an updated edition of Teach Yourself Beginners Latin by the same publisher (so don't buy both!). So far I like it a lot, there is a story to read which tests what you know so far, and the grammar is very clearly explained. I won't say it's simple, but the material is presented in a helpful straightforward way. There are examples of ancient writing which you can dip into - and a helpful introduction to the language. I like the tone - it doesn't patronize you or dumb down the material, but it's friendly and doesn't assume we're all experts in linguistics. Here's one to try ... a `popina' is 1) an illegitimate daughter of a pope ... 2) a small flower found in Rumania ... or 3) an ancient inn or take-away, a place to pop in for a quick snack. The answer is on page 158!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and well paced, 5 Jan 2012
I wanted a book that would introduce me to Latin. Of course, there is no easy way to learn the language but this book did at least make it easier. I covered the first few chapters quickly but then I began to slow down as the grammar and vocabulary became harder to digest. The exercises are really excellent and really do test whether you have learned a particular aspect of grammar. Translation was testing in the second half of the book but that is to be expected. A minor downside: I couldn't see a translation into English of the passages to test whether I had correctly translated the Latin passages. Apparently, there are translations on the internet although I couldn't find them. The C.D. is useful in that one can hear how the words on paper should sound when spoken.

I was learning on my own and of course, that is not the best way to learn a language, nevertheless, I have picked up the very basics even though I find Livy's use of Latin a complete mystery! I can, however, make sense of the Vulgate by what I learnt from this book.

To sum up, this book is an excellent introduction to Latin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Coming Back to Latin, 14 Sep 2011
This review is from: Get Started In Latin: Teach Yourself (Paperback)
Bought this as just joined a U3A doing Latin and this was the book used. Although it says for complete beginners I am finding it a bit tough and I have an O level -albeit 46 years ago- in Latin. This edition is almost identical to previous ones, the story of Paul, mule and monks etc so make sure you don't duplicate. Did not buy CDs, which may have helped, and probably was false economy.
Book has some interesting background information, is well set out and has test yourself and practice sections. There is a mediaeval who dunnit story set in a monastery which allows you to consolidate your vocabulary and grammar learning. Overall it is OK but I think complete beginners may need some extra back up.
