The Hackensaw Boys, few will have come across. Its a modern old time string band, often called americana or alt. country. Similar to the Old Crow Medicine show, but an evolution from Alison Krauss, Gillian Welsh, The Devil Makes Three, etc.

This was their first album. An excellent buy, but that is the difficulty - how to buy. Practically the only place you can buy is direct from the label - and even they don't offer it in an obvious way - it only comes out from one web site, practically across the whole world - so you can see they only sell maybe 1 album a week, so not popular.

Its one of those bands, you wish would hit the big time - the energy they put into music that comes from their heart and soul, and its a band you wish would go well.

All the best - you Hackensaw Boys ....

If you like stringband/bluegrass/country rag--oh man... 14 Feb. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
this is by far one of the best albums i've picked up since Steve Earle and Del Mccoury Band's The Mountain or Old Crow Medicine Show's Greetings from Wawa (GET THIS!!) they kids play traditional tunes with respect and throw in some powerful ballads and it tears it up from start to finish. if you dig on old time, bluegrass, country rag type of music, boy howdy these guys really blow your mind. such intensity and great sound!! the freshest stuff i've heard in so so long...if you like Yonder Mountain, Blueground Undergrass, Smokin Grass, Old Crow Medicine Show, and others, then you should check out these guys...you'll be happy you did.

Rompin' Stopin' Real Country 16 Feb. 2002
By Darryl B. Hopkins - Published on Amazon.com
I first saw the Hackensaw boys opening for another band. I had never heard of them but I was taken in by their high energy good time blend of old time country, mountain music, string band, pre-bluegrass gumbo. With 9 guys (sometimes 10) on the stage, they somehow held it all together when you might expect to hear an acoustic mush.
A band member in the 2nd act that night said, "Man, those Hackensaws rocked my world." I couldn't have said it better. The Hackensaws totally upstaged the main act, and they did it again when I saw them open for Acoustic Syndicate.
You really need to see and hear them live to understand what these guys are up to. But with "get some", you can get a good sample. This CD was recorded direct to tape in someone's living room with no studio tricks. It's just real bona fide music makin.' The sound quality is good and you'll hear a variety of Hackensaw material (mostly original).
If you like "get some" then you may also want to pick up their 2nd CD "Keep It Simple", which is a little less raw, a little more polished, and a little more mid-tempo instead of the mach 3 pace on "get some."
Even my wife -- who doesn't like bluegrass or anything too high or lonesome or old timey -- loved the Hackensaws.

Romping foot-stomping good time!! 5 Dec. 2001
By Beth Garnett - Published on Amazon.com
I instantly bought this CD after hearing it at a listening station at a local music store and it made it's way into my daily musical selections. I was charmed by the old-timey sound and sense of joyous fun inherent in songs like "Get Some" and "Whiskey Momma." The ballads are sweet and strong and equally worthy of a spin on the ol' cd player. They could easily share the stage with any of a number of bands from Leftover Salmon, to Sam Bush, to Acoustic Syndicate, and actually they opened for Cake not that long ago. The live experience that is the Hackensaws transcends any borders of age or muscial preference. If you can't enjoy a live Hackensaw show there is something seriously wrong with your pleasure sensors.
After having seen them live now at least 10 times from WV to Harrisonburg, VA to my hometown of Ch'ville, I have to say they leave an impression on everyone who experiences their musical stylings and showmanship. Not only is the music infectiously happy, but the Boys are so damn charming on and off stage that you can't help but love them. If you get a chance to see them live, DO IT, you won't regret it. And if you're lucky to see them closer to their home (Charlottesville, VA) you'll also get to experience the energy of their fans whose main goals in life seem to be to dance and smile. Keep your eyes open for their new CD, being released in January. I anticipate it's gonna be something special, as I would expect nothing less from these guys. A romping foot-stomping good time!! I like to dance honey how 'bout you? Yee-Haw!
Ryman Auditorium New Years Eve with Del McCoury Band 2 Jan. 2005
By Mark A. Paul - Published on Amazon.com
I saw this group for the first time last night at the big New Year's Eve show at the original Ryman. These are some real nice guys and very talented. They look like the "Squirrel Nut Zippers" band of a few years ago that did blues/swing. They sounded like a mix of great bluegrass, but they have thier own distinctive sound. They forgot to bring thier CD's to sell and they would have sold a bunch...great show and I hope they come back to Nashville and play again.

These guys never fail to amaze me! I recently found out about them and haven't been able to stop listening ever since. They are old timey but upbeat bluegrass with a variety of beats and instruments. They sing about real life and you just have to get up and dance to most of their songs. Going to see them in concert next month---can't wait. Thanks for all you do Hackensaw Boys!!!!!
