Amazon.co.uk Review
The Cold War may be over, but that doesn't mean it can't still be milked for laughs. Get Smart, the sassy film version of the Mel Brooks/Buck Henry-created '60s TV satire, brings plenty of elements of the original series and spins it freshly into the new world of bad guys in the 21st century, pretty much without losing a beat. Steve Carell is perfectly cast as the bumbling Maxwell Smart--but in a slick improvement on the TV show, Smart isn't really hapless--though he has a bit of a self-esteem problem (all around his apartment are sticky notes with exhortations like "You can do it!"). Carell's Maxwell Smart is a sharp techie researcher at the uber-secret crime-battling agency, CONTROL, who's just a little out of his element out in the field. As his data-crunching sidekick Bruce (Masi Oka of Heroes) says, "We're the ones guarding democracy!", aghast that Max would want to be an agent. But Max longs for the action enjoyed by the likes of Agent 23 (a godlike Dwayne Johnson), with glamorous deployments around the world. When he finally gets his dream assignment--as the newly minted Agent 86--he's paired up with the slick and experienced Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), who provides great lines, not to mention some interesting chemistry, while she continually saves Max from harm's way. The cast is terrific, with memorable appearances by Alan Arkin as the Chief, Terrence Stamp as the head of the uber-evil KAOS, and Bill Murray as a (literally) put-out-to-pasture agent whose spy post is inside a tree ("really great, old-school stuff" he calls his assignment). And there's plenty of action, explosions, and creative shootouts with the bad guys (highlight: a freefall from a plane, with two people and just two parachutes). But it's Carell and his combination of insecure yearning and deadpan delivery that make Get Smart as well smart as it is. --A.T. Hurley

DVD Description
Based on the sixties hit TV series Get Smart follows the perils and adventures of Agent Smart (Steve Carell, The 40 Year-old Virgin) as he is sent on his most dangerous and important mission: to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS.

When the headquarters of secret U.S. spy agency CONTROL is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the chief (Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamed of working in the field alongside his idol Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock). Smart is partnered instead with the other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the lovely but lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway, The Devil Wears Prada). Chaos and hilarity ensues in this action-comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Update of Classic "Get Smart" Television Series, 11 Aug 2008
By John Kwok (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Get Smart" is a silly and smart update of the original 1960s hit television series, offering as slapstick humor, the untold story as to how Maxwell Smart became CONTROL Agent 86. Steve Carell is absolutely dead on as the nerdy nebbish Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) in "Get Smart". However, unlike the original actor, Don Adams, from the television series, Carell's bumbling Smart is actually a brilliant technical analyst in disguise, who happens to use his encyclopedic knowledge to help get himself and Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway in yet another brilliant performance) after one deadly serious - but also funny - situation after another. Alan Arkin is also perfect as CONTROL's Chief, while Terence Stamp is fine too as KAOS' sinister head Siegfried, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shows he is a master of both physical comedy and action adventure stunts as CONTROL Agent 23. Long-time fans of the original television series will recognize a lot of homages to the original series, including a surprise cameo by Bernie Kopel as a befuddled German tourist. Yes "Get Smart" may seem a bit long, with too many car crashes and chase scenes, but it is still the funniest film I have seen so far this year. So fellow moviegoers, your mission is clear: "Get Smart" and enjoy every minute of the splendid chemistry between Carell and Hathaway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough belly laughs, 31 Mar 2009
By haunted (IRELAND) - See all my reviews
Steve Carell's (he is an executive producer) movie version of Get Smart is a good DVD for a night in. It is funny but there are very few belly laughs in it.
The cast are all good but the script doesn't really give them a chance to shine. Carell doesn't opt to even try a Don Adams impression and Smart isn't half as incompetent and dimwitted as the original. In fact he is CONTROL's best analyst and that's the only reason he is not a field operative. However after the CONTROL HQ is attacked by KAOS he joins up with Agent 99 to track down the culprits. That's about all you need to know about the plot.
There are a few funny moments but I think an opportunity was lost to make a really funny movie with a good cast.
I think the film lacks the slightly anarchic humour of Mel Brooks and Buck Henry that made the original series such a treat.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is hilarious, 29 Aug 2008
By Hugh Claffey (Co. Kildare Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I went to see this movie with my kids aged 8 through 13 and we all laughed out loud. I haven't had such a good time at the movies in years. The kids chose the movie and I was expecting to fall asleep, but they enjoyed it and so did I. There was lots in it for the grown ups, I especially enjoyed Alan Arkin, as the boss of the spy network, losing his cool with the Vice President (I presume supposed to be Chaney). There were a few quasi-political gags - especially the 'profiling' scene in the plane, and also the stuff you'd expect about boxer shorts and Max shooting himself with this own weapons. I loved the cone of silence. I thought the lovely Ann Hathaway was excellent, though this is probably the hormones talking, and the big Football player guy (can't remember his name) was not bad.
I didn't give it five stars, because I thought the dance scene was very unkind to 'heavy' people, its true Max sent himself up for his 'heavy' past, but I think the scene was more unkind than funny. In fact I thought when the dance stuff started that I was at the usual comedy which has twenty minutes of humour, and runs itself into the ground, but it picked up again after the dancing and I think was hilarious.
If you can, go see it
