Amazon.co.uk Review

John Travolta is the standout in this somewhat cartoonish adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel about a smalltime Miami enforcer (Travolta) who decides to get into the movie business in LA. The cast sparkles--Gene Hackman as a failing cut-rate-movie producer, Rene Russo as a failed actress, Danny DeVito as a vain thespian, Delroy Lindo as a mobster who wants a cut of Travolta's film action--and the script is clever. But not clever enough: this isn't Robert Altman's The Player, as far as satires about Hollywood go. But director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) keeps Get Shorty cute and brisk and that makes for an enjoyable experience. Travolta is great as a vaguely dangerous, supremely self-confident man whose love of movies makes him almost cuddly. --Tom Keogh

Get 'Get Shorty'! 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
When I head John Travolta was heading the cast of a film based on an Elmore Leonard novel, I thought 'Tarantino!'. But Get Shorty isn't a Tarantino film, literally or stylistically. Travolta's character, Chili Palmer, is a crook with a heart of gold - he realises quite early on in this film that what he wants to do is 'make movies', and the ensuing cocktail of filmmaking and crime is very entertaining, flirting vaguely with the same ground as 'The Player'. JT is easily as good in this film as he is in Pulp Fiction. And one of the greatest things about this film is that, for once, Gene Hackman isn't being forced to play a ruthless baddie (as he is in 99% of his films) - his character here, Harry Zimm, is a likeable loser.

The plot of this film sounds a bit like tarantino, but its not. Shylock Chilli Palmer (Travolta) goes to hollywood, ostensibly to collect a debt but, like everyone else in the film, wants to make movies. The cast is brilliant including the much underated Delroy Lindo, a not-used enough Dennis Farina and a beardy James Gandolfini. Travolta and Lindo both play gangster-types who want to break into production, this leads to some scenes of unbridled comedy. Travolta's character is not a million miles away from Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega, less prone to violence and a hundred times as clever, but still retaining that greased hard-man image. It is a light-hearted film, brilliant characters, a good plot, an ending that will either have you laughing uncontrollably or holding your hands out saying "Thats not an ending". All in all, Genious.

Not short on quality 23 Jun 2011
Format:DVD
Still hot after his career reviving turn in Pulp Fiction [DVD] John Travolta stars as ice-cool Miami loan shark Chili Palmer. The movie is a black comedy and also features great turns from the likes of Danny DeVito, Rene Russo and Gene Hackman, with an early appearance from James Gandolfini and a brief cameo from Harvey Keitel.
The film is great fun and an easy watch, mixing moments of violence with sharp one-liners and subtle humour. Still stands up after fifteen years and remains a Travolta high-point and the best film adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel to date.
