Drug smuggling. Racketeering. Loan Sharking. Welcomeito Hollywood!Golden Globe winner John Travolta leads an all-star cast in the hysterical comedy that Times calls "smart, shrewdly crafted and hilarious!"Loan shark Chili palmer (Travola) is bored with the business. So when he arrives in L.A. to collect a debt from down and out filmmaker Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), Chili talks tough.. and then pitches Harry a script idea. Immediately, Chili is swept into the Hollywood scene: He schmoozes film star Martin Weir (Danny Devito), romances B-movie queen Karen Flores (Rene Russo) and even gets reservations at the hottest restaurants in town. In fact, all would be smooth for this cool new producer, if it weren't for the drug smugglers and the angry mobster who won't leave him alone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get 'Get Shorty'! 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
When I head John Travolta was heading the cast of a film based on an Elmore Leonard novel, I thought 'Tarantino!'. But Get Shorty isn't a Tarantino film, literally or stylistically. Travolta's character, Chili Palmer, is a crook with a heart of gold - he realises quite early on in this film that what he wants to do is 'make movies', and the ensuing cocktail of filmmaking and crime is very entertaining, flirting vaguely with the same ground as 'The Player'. JT is easily as good in this film as he is in Pulp Fiction. And one of the greatest things about this film is that, for once, Gene Hackman isn't being forced to play a ruthless baddie (as he is in 99% of his films) - his character here, Harry Zimm, is a likeable loser.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Moyles' favourite film 2 Oct 2002
Format:VHS Tape
The plot of this film sounds a bit like tarantino, but its not. Shylock Chilli Palmer (Travolta) goes to hollywood, ostensibly to collect a debt but, like everyone else in the film, wants to make movies. The cast is brilliant including the much underated Delroy Lindo, a not-used enough Dennis Farina and a beardy James Gandolfini. Travolta and Lindo both play gangster-types who want to break into production, this leads to some scenes of unbridled comedy. Travolta's character is not a million miles away from Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega, less prone to violence and a hundred times as clever, but still retaining that greased hard-man image. It is a light-hearted film, brilliant characters, a good plot, an ending that will either have you laughing uncontrollably or holding your hands out saying "Thats not an ending". All in all, Genious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and delightfull movie! 5 April 2013
Format:DVD
This is a brilliant movie. Amazing cast, at their best, with a delightfull tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. The plot twists back and forth, and unlike most movies, the twists are actually fun.

Basically a tale about a mobster turned producer with a heart of gold and Hollywood at his feet. Highly recommended!
