Synopsis

With GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN', rapper Curtis 50 Cent Jackson follows in the footsteps of his musical counterpart, Eminem (8 MILE), by giving movie stardom a shot. Directed by Jim Sheridan (IN AMERICA, MY LEFT FOOT) and written by Terence Winter, the film tells a fictionalised version of 50 Cent's own troubled life story. Marcus is a quiet young man who adores his loving mother (Serena Reeder). But after she is brutally murdered in an apparent drug deal gone wrong, Marcus heads down the wrong road himself. He abandons high school to sell drugs for local kingpin Levar (Bill Duke) and his underling, Majestic (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). Years later, when he reunites with his childhood sweetheart (Joy Bryant) and is thrown in jail, Marcus decides to leave drug selling behind in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a rapper. Unfortunately, Majestic doesn't want to let him go, resulting in a tragedy that might destroy his life forever. Much like Curtis Hanson with 8 MILE, Sheridan seems an unlikely choice to direct an urban drama about the blossoming of a gangsta rapper. But that is exactly what makes his film so refreshing. Photographed with a gritty tenderness by Declan Quinn and featuring another scene-stealing turn from Terrence Howard, GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' is equal parts social commentary, crime thriller, and heartfelt drama.

4.0 out of 5 stars not to be missed, 22 Mar 2006
By A Customer
this film isn't another gangsta film it has a decent storyline to it, which most people can relate to. it shows fiddy picking up his life and making something outta himself. could be very inspirin to youngsters who have been misled. definately one to watch, for me it opnened my eyes to what type of stuff actually goes on in the world as i was very shelterd to this type of stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, 26 Jan 2007

I thought that this film would perhaps never be as good as Eminem's 8 Mile film but 50 cent's acting ability is surprisingly better than i expected. Its a decent storyline which kind of outlines his life but only loosely as Marcus (50 cent) sells drugs on the street and works with Majestic who won't let him go when Marcus decides to turn to rapping. Anyway, this is worth a look i think, if you really want a great gangster film though, then Training Day is the best of them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 15 Jun 2006

Everyone is comparing this film to 8 mile but get rich or die tryin is as much 8 mile as licence to drive is the fast and the furious
This film is full of action and based on 50 cents real life, although exagerated.
This is a must see film
And before you ask I am not a big 50 cent fan

50 can't act..this "sory" about his "ghetto" life is BS. Rappers should stick to smoking and rapping and leave the acting to the pros.
