BBC Review

The be-diamoned and be-dazzling Dame's first album in nearly a decade comes out of the speakers firing on all cylinders, made over, souped up and more than ready for action.

Bassey approaches her 70th birthday in June with all the pomp and panache of someone who knows that she's still got it, and 'it' in this case is a voice that makes microphones simply redundant and is strictly off the menu for musical vegetarians. This new shut up-sit up-and-start listening outing starts with that strangely seductive panther-like purr of old before Bassey takes possession of Pink's 'Get The Party Started' with the thumping Big Beat chutzpah last heard in her late-90s collaboration with Propellerheadz.

What follows is a jaw-dropping collection of remixes that foreground the Tiger Bay vixen's fabulous stadium-filling voice with all the drama and glamour you'd expect. Raise your expectations here and you won't be disappointed in a 'Big Spender' that makes Marilyn Manson seem like a novice nun, courtesy of a stunning remix from Chuck Norman and Bob Kraushaar (aka NorthxNWest), who also provide fresh, feisty face-lifts of stage-classic 'I Who Have Nothing' and disco anthem 'I Will Survive'.

'Slave To The Rhythm' gets some sexy and seductive treatment from oh-so-sophisticated remixers The Glimmers, and even Lionel Ritchie's saccharine-soaked 'Hello' seems less risible heard in Soul II Soul producer Dobie's shimmering, slow-burn of a take with Bassey in deliciously feline form. Just as playful is Restless Soul's knowingly tongue-in-cheek treatment of 'Kiss Me Honey Honey' which begs the question Whose tongue? Whose cheek?

Throughout, the Dame is on impeccable form, equally at home with Bugz In The Attic's cool-as-a-Dry Martini take on 'What Now My Love', supremely poised in 'This Is My Life', a Bassey essential belted out with take-it-or-leave-it bravado against a swirling, absinthe-tinged cabaret backing.

And recent chart entry 'The Living Tree' - throbbing away like the Bond movie theme it should have been - adds its own scene-stealing contribution to announce in no uncertain terms that the Dame is back. And, damn it, she's as good as ever! --Michael Quinn

Album Description

On 25 June 2007, Dame Shirley Bassey celebrates her 70 year with the release of her first album for almost 10 years, "GET THE PARTY STARTED" which she will showcase as part of her set at this year's Glastonbury Festival where she is due to perform for the first time in her 50 year career. "GET THE PARTY STARTED" - The Album features 13 superb new remixed and re-worked tracks by some of today's most contemporary producers to making the album a must have for music fans young and old. The album combines new recordings, new vocals and remixes of classic tracks including Big Spender, You Only Live Twice, I Will Survive. Also included is the Top 40 "The Living Tree" which has bestowed the honour of having more hits across the decades than any other artist ever - including ELVIS! Due to massive public demand, this incredible new album features Dame Shirley Bassey's absolutely fantastic newly recorded version of Pink's - Get The Party Started recently featured in Marks & Spencer's spectacular pre-Christmas TV advertising campaign. Amongst the incredible recordings are the fantastic new versions of Big Spender, I Who Have Nothing and I Will Survive by producers Chuck Norman and Bob Kraushaar aka NorthxNorthwest whose remixes include Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Williams and Peter Gabriel. In addition there's the awesome remix of the Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm from The Glimmers, whilst super producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has remixed the classic You Only Live Twice. Also to be found on the Get The Party Started album is a wicked new version of What Now My Love from uber cool remix collective Bugz In the Attic as well as Brazilian remix supreme Bruno-e's version of Where Is the Love, Restless Soul's outstanding new remix treatment of Kiss Me Honey, Mungolian Jet Set's fantastic re-working of Can I Touch You There, whilst former Nomad Soul/Soul II Soul producer Dobie completely transforms Lionel Ritchie's worldwide smash hit Hello. This incredible album project spearheaded by Dame Shirley Bassey sees her working with songwriting partners Catherine Feeney and Nikki Lamborn, who co-wrote the beautiful Bassey neo-classic The Living Tree. Catherine and Nikki make up London-based band, Never The Bride who originally approached the Dame about the possibility of recording The Living Tree last summer. The duo had recorded their version of the song, but convinced Dame Shirley it was right for her during a trip to Monte Carlo (where the legendary singer now lives). A chance encounter with the Dame in the gym of a 5 star hotel in the city led to Dame Shirley Bassey hearing and falling in love with the song and agreeing to record it.

AGELESS DAME SHIRLEY 11 July 2007
Format:Audio CD
There comes a time when a Dame has the right to rest and forget the world! Not only because she has earned a rest, but mostly because she has nothing to offer!!! With Dame Shirley Bassey, The Party Has Just Started could be the name of this FABULOUS! album... Perfect new mixes and recordings of her greatest hits, with an edge of timeless modernity. Thank You, Dame Shirley, for everything, and for showing us that there's still beauty, class and style, in your timeless renditions of these songs!

Breathtaking !!!!! 25 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
I was apprehensive when I heard this album was going to be made up of new arrangements of The great Bassey hits as i am such an ardent fan. When I inserted it in my cd player I was instantly blown away by the sophistication and freshness of these recordings. I truly believe this album is going to to be one of the true classics of the 21st century. A Masterpiece !! Well done Dame Shirley, you have nailed it this time.

Based on the bond-esque Living Tree and samples already available on-line and other tracks played on the radio this is going to be a great album. The title says it all and the party has started for all of Dame Shirley's fans, new and old. She really puts her own stamp on tracks like "I Will Survive" which is as far removed from the Gloria Gaynor version as you could imagine. Remixes of Where Is The Love and Big Spender take them into the 21st century and Cagedbaby's remix of This Is My Life is as cool as ice!. And who could forget Shirley's version of Get The Party Started from the M&S TV adverts?. It's going to be a great party! Don't miss out!
