Okay, the first thing most people will be asking when they look at this page is, "what the hell is this recording?!". Well, this is the Ruts gig at the Marquee, Wardour Street, Soho, 19 July 1979 from which "Human Punk" was lifted for the classic `Crack' long player. This was, sadly their only studio album with Malcolm Owen (R.I.P.), before his untimely death in July 1980.
This is a band at the height of their powers, playing about a month after they'd scored a top ten hit with the classic "Babylon's Burning" (which, rightly, features here twice), and two months before the release of the `Crack' L.P. which is played here nearly in its entirety. This is perfect, the playing, the vocals, the mix, everything is tight, but not to the detriment of the rough edges, the power and the aggression of the band, but also putting to bed this myth that firstly punk bands couldn't play live and and secondly couldn't expertly master their instruments, Paul Fox (R.I.P.) on guitar is brilliant.
And it gets better, the timing of the CD is a whopping 67 minutes and 31 seconds including encores, much longer than any other live recordings I've heard from the band. The length is sumed up by Malcolm who before the last song jokingly complains that he's wanting to get to his bed but can't because the audience continually shout out for more.
And better still, some of you reading this will undoubtedly have this recording already, allbeit unofficially. Obviously this is in better quality, but it is now complete as it includes a second version of the classic "In A Rut" with the added bonus of the Damned's Algy "where's me 'ammer" Ward shouting all sorts of obscenities at the crowd, this and Malcolm's banter with the audience, throughout, are worth the price of admission alone.
Oh yeah, the track "Gotta Little Number" is correctly, known as "Stepping Bondage". And track 16 listed as "Savage Circle" isn't, it's actually "Society" which was originally the B side of the brilliant "Babylon's Burning" single.
This CD is a must have, playing live was what the Ruts were all about and as such I would give it 10 stars never mind 5.
