Product Description

Product Description

The 2LP vinyl collector s edition of Get On The Right Track sees Lois Wilson (Mojo, Record Collector) select 32 of the most sought-after tracks from her 3CD compilation of 90 magnificent recordings, mostly R&B, but with a smattering of jazz and ska, which reflect what mods would have been enjoying on the early to mid sixties club scene. When Jamaican born Duke Vin, a former DJ on Tom The Great Sebastian s Beat Street System, set up his own system in 1955, he got the place jumping. The sound system was like nothing London had witnessed before. It was loud, exciting and had no curfew. Duke Vin inspired Count Suckle, another Ladbroke Grove resident, who set up a rival system and the pair soundtracked the first generation West Indians blues parties with a playlist of US R&B 45s. Club Eleven and the Flamingo attracted newly settled Jamaicans too. Out of these clubs and sound systems, mod grew. These mods were defined by their impeccable music taste and their smart clobber. They would dance their nights away at the Scene, to records spun by Guy Stevens, the UK Sue label manager and one of mod s main pivots. They also frequented the Marquee and Count Suckle s Roaring Twenties. Compiled and annotated by Lois Wilson, Get On The Right Track s first LP reflects the R&B, blues, soul, jazz and ska sides you would have heard at such clubs, while the second LP features sounds from the same period (many of which were unreleased in the UK at the time) that light up the mod scene today. Get On The Right Track has been carefully compiled to avoid track overlap with Fantastic Voyage s previous mod collection Boogie Chillen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb selection of maximum R&B for modernists! 18 May 2014
Format:Audio CD
This excellent set contains 90 tracks of original rhythm and blues, ska, mod jazz and early soul compiled by Mojo and Record Collector's Lois Wilson. If you have ever been a mod or just love US and Jamaican music from the 1960s you need this!
Disc one concentrates on bluesier sounds including many that fuelled the British R&B boom such as John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom and Dimples both covered by The Animals, Billy Boy Arnold's I Wish You Would covered by The Yardbirds, Slim Harpo's Don't Start Crying Now covered by Them, Freddy King's Hide Away versioned by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Slim Harpo's I Got Love If You Want It covered by The Kinks and adapted by legendary London mod Pete Meaden into The Who's debut single issued when they were The High Numbers, I'm The Face. Many of the tracks here were released on the legendary UK Sue label run by Scene club DJ Guy Stevens including Louisiana Red's I Done Woke Up, The Megatons' Shimmy, Shimmy, Walk and Russell Byrd's Hitch Hike. Early Blue Beat label mod faves Dumplins by Byron Lee and Oh Carolina by The Folkes Brothers also feature.
Disc 2 has a more soulful mix with highlights including Barrett Strong's Money (covered by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles), James Brown's Shout and Shimmy (covered by The Who), The Contours' manic Do You Love Me, Marvin Gaye's Hitch Hike (covered by The Stones), Ray Charles' Get On The Right Track Baby (covered by Georgie Fame), the infectious, jazzy Scene Club floor filler You Can't Sit Down by the Phil Upchurch Combo and the sweet Chicago soul of Major Lance's Delilah.

A fabulous compilation of genuine tracks from the heady days of the London scene. An authentic recollection for those who were there and a perfect legacy for those who love the lineage of soul but were not there.

Excellent compilation, really feeling the mood of the era. Obvious cult classics combined with a selection interesting tracks from left field. Good balance between Jazz, Ska, Soul and RnB. Get It!
