Critically, Rhianna has received nothing but un-bridled success even before the release of her debut album Get On. Nearly every music magazine from Smash Hits to the NME raved about her debut single "Oh Baby", a really refreshing take on the classic Spector "wall of sound" with a vocal that lifts the song far above its latter day peers. Hailing from Leeds, Rhianna's influences include many UK R&B artists and echoes of Sade can be heard on tracks like the sleepy "Runaway" which sounds like the sort of thing Zero 7 might have come up with had they discovered her first. Unlike so many modern R&B and soul albums, the styles on Get On vary quite broadly between tracks such as the funky "Damn" where the soft-edges toughen up for a more US style, hip-hop infused dancefloor-stomper, with full on attitude more akin to Sunshine Anderson than Beverley Knight.
Rhianna's voice shows amazing versatility throughout and although she doesn't demonstrate the same range, her voice has a quality not unlike Minnie Riperton especially in her over-dubbed harmonies. One last highlight to mention is the second single to be lifted, "Word Love" which pays homage to one more unlikely soul hero both musically and vocally, Lenny Kravitz in his early days--sounds odd but it really works. --David TruemanSee all Product Description
