Amazon.co.uk Review

Claire Teal has proved herself equally adept as pop singer and jazz diva. On her eighth album, Get Happy, she mixes up a bit of everything: pop and jazz standards along with some of her own material. As the title suggests, it's a largely upbeat album, unsurprising for a singer that exudes warmth and cheer much more naturally than melancholy or wistfulness. The chirpy swing of the title track is matches by at least half a dozen others--the waltzy "Get It On Sam", the gutsy versions of Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Van Morrison's "Moondance" among them. Slower songs balance the album out, though these are far from lachrymose ballads. Neither the intimate, Latin-esque opener "All for Love", nor the former Roy Orbison hit "Love Hurts" or the vaguely sultry version of Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" sound very heartbroken--just technically perfect and dreamy to listen to. If there's any criticism of Get Happy, it's that Teal and her band don't bother taking any risks. But then you weren't really expecting them to, were you? --Danny McKenna

Album Description

A unique singer, songwriter, broadcaster and live performer Clare Teal is an extraordinary talent and one of Britain's most exciting entertainers. Recorded in just a matter of days with her five piece band `Get Happy' bears testimony to Clare's enjoyment of the recording process and the way she wholeheartedly embraces the challenge. On the familiar songs Clare has that rare, and almost unique, ability of making you feel that you suddenly hear the lyric as if for the very first time. On the original songs, `High Love', `Get On It Sam' and `All For Love' Clare demonstrates her understanding of and passion for classic songwriting as she draws from the likes of Esquivel, Bacharach and the sounds of yesteryear and marries them with the lyrics that are inspired by her own life experiences.

Winner of numerous awards including British Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2005 & 2007 and BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year 2006, Clare is also a seasoned Radio 2 broadcaster. Having previously presented `Clare Teal's Jazz Divas' and deputised for Sarah Kennedy Clare is currently presenting both `The Big Band Special' and `Al Bowlly - Britain's First Pop Star', a series profiling the 1930's singer.

"Muisc to melt to" - Jamie Cullum, 2008

"Wonderful. Worth raving about" - Michael Parkinson

"Ladies and gents, I'd like to introduce someone that I'm a fan of. She's a threat! When I say a threat, she's a triple threat - she writes, she sings and she can do like a fire thing right!? Please go out and buy Clare Teal's record! - Michael Bublé

Will make you happy! 10 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to hear a review copy of this album, which is the best yet from Clare Teal. She has returned to her jazz roots but has grown since her encounter with more mainstream pop, with an even richer voice and interpretations. Here, her versions of the classics - Cheek to Cheek, Begin the Beguine, Time after Time, the seldom-heard Love for Sale and the title song etc. - bring something fresh each time so that they become unmistakably hers, whilst not being twiddled with unnecessarily! The covers of the "newer" classics - Moondance, Breaking up etc - again are interpreted so that they become new again and the three new songs (All for love, released as a single, Get on It Sam and High Love) are surely destined to become classics and covered in their own right.

It's a beautifully balanced album in every way and the backing trio and vocalists (her "Exceedingly Good Musicians"!) both support her and add their own individual and joint contributions to make a very satisfying whole.

This is an album which can only burnish Clare's reputation even more - I can't recommend it too highly!

Well all I can say is well done Clare!

Echoing what Sue has said, we were lucky enough to have a pre-release copy to listen to and absolutely adore it.

A return to Clare's better known domain of classic Jazz standards and some cool beyond belief covers of more recent tracks plus the added bonus of three Teal-classics - this is the album we've been waiting for.

The intepretation of the standards old and new re-invent the tracks, and you hear the lyric again for the first time. Not many people can do this, fortunatly Clare can!

It's great to hear an album that is a more realistic representation of Clare's superb live performances.

If you want cheering up this grey dour February - buy it - actually buy it anyway - it's sunny where you are!

Forget all your fancy, spa pamper sessions, this is the only therapy you'll need!

This is another fabulous album from the Jazz sensation Clare Teal. 'Get Happy' brings Clare back to her jazz roots with standards she makes her own by adding flair with her own ingenious style and three new songs that showcase Clare's talent as a singer/songwriter to it's max.

Clare's vocals are very much out in front, brilliantly utilising the pure, velvety smooth tones creating intimacy and warmth. Her amazing band add supremity to this CD with the equally masterful Jim Watson on piano, stupendous Chris Dagley on drums, fantastic Simon Little on bass and the wonderful backing from the Symphomanics, Adie Chivers and Colin Ball.

If you like beautifully created, good music that will put a smile on your face, a spring in your step and a tenderness in your heart then this is for you.

Get happy - no you'll be ecstatic!
