i have to admit that george formby's later films aren't in the same class as his 1930s ones. even so, for me, "get cracking" is quite a return to form for our george. the plot is a fairly strong one about 2 rival local home guards competing to be the best in their village. the songs are pretty good, as are the jokes and the slapstick.
as was usually the case in his films, george uncovers some shady goings-on and this one is no exception as the local villains attempt all kinds of trouble-making in order to win the contest of the best local home guard.
there are some good highlights, such as a car chase scene, the little shirmish between george and the main baddie and of course, george's attempts to charm the local pretty girl.
i would name "get cracking" as one of formby's best later films from "british columbia." enjoy!
