Not found on any DM album (not including compilations), this is one of my favourites and a grossly underrated song. The lyrics are perhaps overly serious (like many other DM songs - Everything Counts, People are People...) but it carries Alan Wilder's signature arrangements. Everything just fits perfectly together in intertwining harmonies and almost Bach-style counterpoint, which I think is the common thread in all good Depeche Mode songs, and somewhat lacking since Wilder left the band. And yes, it's 80's music with 80's sounds, so if you don't like the clinking drum machines and filter-sweep synth sounds - don't buy it.

To celebrate the arrival in the band of Alan Wilder, Depeche Mode recorded this single which doesn't appear in any album. The inclusion of the new band member was to mark a turn in DM's career, a move towards a more experimental electronic sound (Wilder has always been considered a studio wizard, an avant-garde musician). "Get the balance right" is a lyrically serious, musically low-key and quiet song: very catchy and incisive though not very commercial. Too bad that the other three tracks (including "The great outdoors", a weird and atmospheric instrumental) are nothing special...
