This CD came with the April 2004 issue of BBC Music Magazine. It features the BBC Singers, conducted by Danish choral conductor Bo Holten, who has served in the past as their principal guest conductor. The three motets from the first book of the "Sacrarum cantoninum" date from 1603, while the Tenebrae Responsories date from 1611. The CD booklet conveniently provides complete text translations and citations of the portions of the Bible that provide the verses, as well as a good summary description of the religious ceremonies behind the texts, particularly useful to those not necessarily familiar with those ceremonies (such as this writer). (There is also the briefest description of the incident that made Gesualdo the most notorious composer in all of Western music.)
The BBC Singers are on very, very fine form under the leadership of Holten, and are recorded well. If you received this CD with the magazine, or if you are looking for a convenient introduction to the music of Gesualdo, this CD will serve you very well.
