This is one of the, alas, few box sets issued by Naxos, and it is worth every penny. Delitiae Musicae, an all-male Italian ensemble specialized in Italian Renaissance and Baroque music, is conducted by Marco Longhini, who studied not only orchestral conducting but also architecture, composition, and singing.
Originally these CDs were issued individually between 2010 and 2013; they are now packaged beautifully in a card box and paper sleeves, with a comprehensive notebook that contains all the texts of the madrigals (original Italian and English translation) and insightful notes by Marco Longhini (again in Italian and English). The whole set is made in Austria.
Love, rejection, death, guilt, despair, tempestuous emotions, nightmares, obsessions, and hope of redemption are all present in Prince Gesualdo’s highly distilled art of unusual and haunting harmonies – a vigorous, strange, and innovative soundscape.
Everything here is beyond reproach: music, interpretation, and sound recording all concur to offer a sophisticated, intense, and complex musical experience.
The notes say that Delitiae Musicae "is under exclusive contract to Naxos for the fourteen-CD collection of the Complete Madrigals by Monteverdi" – needless to say, I can hardly wait to see that cycle completed!
