Product Description

Product Description

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, became famous for two reasons: the bloody double murder of his first wife and her lover, and his passionate and erotic view of profane love. The Madrigals chart the changes in Gesualdos style, and contain some of the most inspired and anguished vocal works in the entire madrigal repertoire, on the themes of love, rejection, death, suffering, joy and sorrow. Brimming with often astonishing and sometimes unpredictable melodic and tonal contrasts to express the agonies and ecstacies of love, Gesualdos Madrigals show him to have been one of the most inventive and eccentric musical minds of his age.

3.0 out of 5 stars where are the women? 16 Jan 2014
Of course Gesualdo's madrigals are stunningly innovative, "modern", "anguished" etc., and Delitiae Musicae deliver well-considered performances. The price is clearly unbeatable. But what a pity that this is an all-male ensemble, while the madrigal, for once, is a genre in 16th century music that welcomes women, and in which women participated as (near) equals of men! Making great efforts to avoid women's voices in religious music of that time... fine. But doing the same for madrigals nearly smacks of misogyny, which most madrigalists can hardly be accused of. More pertinently maybe, it decreases the expressiveness and flavour (some spice missing?) of the performances. This is exacerbated by the ponderous tempi DM favours generally .... long drawn out singing does not necessarily make Gesualdo more exciting. One wishes for some more fire and energy. Who knows whether women singers would not have brought that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince of Venosa’s Anguished Madrigals 12 Oct 2013
By Bogdan Petculescu - Published on Amazon.com
This is one of the, alas, few box sets issued by Naxos, and it is worth every penny. Delitiae Musicae, an all-male Italian ensemble specialized in Italian Renaissance and Baroque music, is conducted by Marco Longhini, who studied not only orchestral conducting but also architecture, composition, and singing.

Originally these CDs were issued individually between 2010 and 2013; they are now packaged beautifully in a card box and paper sleeves, with a comprehensive notebook that contains all the texts of the madrigals (original Italian and English translation) and insightful notes by Marco Longhini (again in Italian and English). The whole set is made in Austria.

Love, rejection, death, guilt, despair, tempestuous emotions, nightmares, obsessions, and hope of redemption are all present in Prince Gesualdo’s highly distilled art of unusual and haunting harmonies – a vigorous, strange, and innovative soundscape.

Everything here is beyond reproach: music, interpretation, and sound recording all concur to offer a sophisticated, intense, and complex musical experience.

The notes say that Delitiae Musicae "is under exclusive contract to Naxos for the fourteen-CD collection of the Complete Madrigals by Monteverdi" – needless to say, I can hardly wait to see that cycle completed!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful recording 2 May 2014

The voices are crisp and clear, making it a beautiful recording that is well worth the price given. The packaging was more than adequate and kept the product safe. The box itself is far sturdier than the typical plastic containers..
