Product Description

Gertrude Jekyll was one of the most important garden designers of the twentieth century. A prolific writer and a hugely influential plantswoman, her circle of friends included some of the most distinguished architects, horticulturists, artists, and writers of the time. This new volume in the Country Life Archives series celebrates Jekyll's gardens and her legendary theories on color, planting, and design with a selection of her most famous collaborations with Sir Edwin Lutyens and other important architects. The text is illustrated with over 150 superb photographs that capture the enduring magic of Jekyll's creative genius. Drawing on Country Life’s archive of photographs, the book presents a fabulous selection of some of Jekyll’s most famous garden collaborations with Lutyens, which spanned forty years and ranged over more than fifty gardens. Orchards, Deanery Garden, Hestercombe Gardens, Lambay Castle, and Folly Farm are among their seminal masterpieces. The work of other important contemporary architects in her circle, such as Oliver Hill at Valewood and L. Rome Guthrie at Townhill Park, are included. Five themed chapters based on the subjects of Jekyll’s own books—Home and Garden, Gardens Old and New, Gardens for Small Country Houses, Colour in the Flower Garden, and Garden Ornament—offer an opportunity to visit some of her greatest gardens. Here are Jekyll’s own garden at Munstead Wood, Surrey, with her incomparable flower borders; the historical gardens at St Catherine’s Court in Somerset and Owlpen Manor, Gloucestershire; and the architect, Inigo Triggs’s Little Boarhunt, with its traditional formality on a small scale. Here, too, are the magnificent water gardens at Marsh Court and the exceptional restoration at The Manor House at Upton Grey in Hampshire. A final chapter on garden ornament highlights Jekyll’s aesthetic guidelines on pergolas, water features, and garden houses.

Aurum Press has published more than twenty books on houses and gardens based on the archives of Country Life Magazine. Each book has selected the houses, their interiors and gardens from a certain perspective, such as region, period, architect or having been demolished. This book is one of the latest in these series, now based on the works and life of Gertrude Jekyll, the most famous English garden writer and designer at the beginning of the 20th century. Country Life published many of her books and her articles on gardens and gardening were often placed in their magazine. The text of this volume is informative and well documented, with chapters named after titles of her books. The greatest strength of this book is the selection and arrangement of the beautiful photographs along the text. The time span of these pictures is more than hundred years, from old fashioned black and white to recent colour photographs, here presented in an coherent manner, by selecting either colour or black and white photographs for each garden or topic discussed, which gives the book a pleasant presentation. The last sentence of this book is an excellent summary: "Jekyll set the record straight on the difference between commonplace gardening and that which could be ranked as fine art". In case you already possess Jane Brown's "Gardens of a golden afternoon" or Richard Bisgrove's "The Gardens of Gertrude Jekyll", this book will be a valuable addition. Highly recommended for all English garden lovers.

Received this book today and am so thrilled with it. It is in excellent condition and the coloured pictures are delightful plus the added attraction of the garden plans done by a water colourist. There are also black and white photographs which add atmosphere. I can't wait to get sat down to read it. Browsing through it has really whet my appetite. Richard Bisgrove has selected the best of Miss Jekyll's planting plans and her choice of plants for gardens are still relevant for today's gardens. She was an amazing person .I am going to really enjoy this book.

very dissappointing nearly sent it back. very few colour plates. Majority black and white.
I bought the book for gardening ideas. Not enough Gertrude Jekyll design ideas.
The front cover gives the wrong impression.I assumes that it would be far more colourful.......
