All too often Gershwin is recorded as a safe seller for people who don't really like Classical Music, or people who want Easy Listening Music by a Real Composer. The usual result is lazy pigeonholing by pleasant but lightweight jazzing up (frequently with Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris) or the addition of an impressive but inapproppriate late romantic weight and sheen (a frequent failing with the piano concerto).
Virgin did a real service to this composer when they gave Wayne Marshall total control of these performaces as Soloist and Conductor. He lets Gershwin's interplay of classical and jazz elements speak for itself without forcing a marriage or accentuating the jazz element. Instead he revels in the wonderful instrumental phrasing and crystal clear orchestral textures (no wonder Ravel said that he had nothing to teach Gershwin). This approach pays special dividends in the Piano Concerto where the clarity of the phrasing and interplay of piano and orchestra is a delight - think Prokofiev piano works at their most inventive coupled with Ravel's skill at orchestration - and in the Porgy and Bess Symphony Suite - here the refusal to 'swing' everything - instead luxuriating in the particular mood of each piece - means that when a real sassy jazzy feel is actually called at the end for it stands out all the more.
All that and this is as comprehensive a collection of Gershwin's Piano and Orchestra works as you will find - Snap it up!

I have always loved this music, so when I had the chance to get the digital download I jumped at the chance, The wife went from a "not again" listener to " wow, it is so good is'nt it, " so another Gershwin converted listener.

I was drawn to this recording by Classic FM and it is very good. The arrangements are much as Gershwin himself would have enjoyed: somewhat 'jazzy' but still very good. The Rhapsody in Blue & An American in Paris are one of the best renditions I have heard.

I owned this pairing way back in my vinyl days. and it has come up well (from c. 1959) in its CD incarnation. The only possible complaint might be that it's short measure for a CD, but it's easily picked up on sale or used, and you shouldn't miss it. "An American in Paris" is the more enchanting piece, and the NY Philharmonic have a field day with it here, with nice solo work and plenty of oomph and presence in the tuttis. Gershwin's handling of the transitions from the bright-eyed Parisian street music (with taxi horns?) to the more interior smoky-club weight and richness of the blues is quite masterful, and here (unlike with "Rhapsody in Blue") the orchestration is his own, and it's full of wit and invention and expressiveness. As the piece goes on, the ways in which the two basic modes -- call them interior and exterior -- begin to combine is very engaging, and one can't help feeling that this is much more fun than, say, a tone-poem of comparable length by Richard Strauss.

With Bernstein at the piano, and the CBS "house" orchestra -- better known for its Mahler and Beethoven with Bruno Walter in these days -- we have a lovely account of the Rhapsody. Bernstein's playing has an unaffected almost improvisational relaxation to it, and the orchestral soloists are richly recorded. Previn and others have given us fine versions of this music, but this is still as good as it gets.

This performance of the Rhapsody in Blue has a savage cut in the middle.

This means that it is not worthy of any consideration.

Brilliant cd bought to replace an old LP from the 60's. Just like listening to the original versions.
