Product Description

Product Description

The Geronimo Breach is a breakneck-paced thrill ride that pits the world's most unlikely protagonist against the deadliest adversaries on the planet. From the corridors of Langley to the sweltering jungles of Panama, from the hills of Pakistan to the cocaine trails of Colombia, a clandestine scheme to preserve a terrible secret goes horribly awry, plunging a reluctant hero down a deadly rabbit hole of deceit and betrayal, while raising disturbing questions about the media, the war on terror & its linkage with the war on drugs, & the nature of reality in an age of sound-bites and photo ops.

Albert Ross is a malingering misanthrope - a boozing, chain smoking philanderer; shifty, lazy, cowardly, going to fat, & more prone to doing the wrong thing than any man alive. His purgatorial existence working for the State Department in Panama gets shattered when a routine errand becomes a race against the clock, battling adversaries for whom no price is too high to protect a secret that could topple the world order. As the body count climbs in a struggle without rules, Al must face his own demons, as well as the myriad very real ones intent upon destroying him. The unexpectedly shattering conclusion of this richly drawn thriller is both topical & chillingly plausible, making for a roller-coaster action/adventure without parallel.

Q & A for The Geronimo Breach w/ bestselling author Russell Blake

Question: The Geronimo Breach is a radical departure from your usual thrillers. In this, we follow the tribulations of arguably the most horrible protagonist on the planet. Why write this character, this story, this way?

RB: It started off as a knee-jerk reaction to several books I'd read, where the heroes were, well, bland & predictable. So over a few beers, I thought, what about writing a hero who's so despicable there's no way anyone could like him, but by the end of the book, in spite of him or ourselves, we do? Anyone can write a hero with appeal. How about one who has no appeal, and will actually do the worst possible thing for his situation, every time? A slob who's so low, he's compulsively losing even when he could win? Out of that came Al, who is probably the most remarkable character I've ever written. Can he prevail? Can he be redeemed? Is he even worth redeeming? Al's my favorite character out of all my books, by far. No question.

Q: The Geronimo Breach's conspiracy is a shocker, & calls into question some sacred beliefs. Have you gotten any negative feedback about it?

RB: Other than the circling black helicopters, you mean? Seriously, I just took something that seemed absurd to me, & proposed an alternative possibility. If it rings true, that says a lot for my powers of invention. Will we ever know the truth? Who even knows what the truth is anymore? The truth is evasive, and in my opinion, skepticism too lacking.

Q: The Geronimo Breach has drawn acclaim from other authors as being landmark & defining. What's your take on it?

RB: Geronimo is one of the books I'd recommend to readers who've never read one of my books, along with King of Swords and JET. If they want to know how I differ from the monosyllabic guys cranking out formulaic screeds featuring hackneyed characters in predictable situations, my response would be, read Geronimo or King or JET. I'm particularly proud of the characters & the plot twists and turns, & would argue there's no other books quite like them.

Q:Why do readers respond the way they do to Al?

RB: I think it's refreshing to read a protagonist who's so badly flawed. We see in him bits of ourselves, or people we know, & that resonates as being true. Al is remarkable, in that even after I finished with him, he lingers in my psyche like fungus. Hard to shake him.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Joy - Original, Inventive and amusing 15 Jan 2012

I'd never heard of Russell Blake before and as a kindle addict came across this book. I read his notes first and although, I confess, that I do like high octane thrillers I have recently been getting a bit bored with the low priced one's available on Kindle. They seemed at best to, to fall a little short in various areas whether too little action or too much action and also to be paper thin on plot, characters etc

So I bought this with a reasonable idea of what I would be getting - or so I thought.

This book surpassed all my hopes. It has great characters, 'pacey' descriptive dialogue and is a real story with a beginning, a middle and an end!

The lead character is, as promised, hard to love initially but by the end I was rooting for him. The other characters were all well defined and believable, especially if you are as cynical as me. Mr Blake did not hesitate to kill off characters even if they were likeable which was helpful to both the plot and storyline.

He also managed to spring quite a few surprises, especially the contents of the video, but even at the end he still managed to keep the surprises coming.

I loved this book and will certainly be reading more of his work. I wish some of the other low cost kindle authors were even 10% as good as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good read 7 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Blake does a great job of creating a group of reprehensible characters that left me alternately despising them and cheering them on, although the cheering occurred with quite a bit of reluctance! Al Ross is the most unlikely hero I've come across, and he only survives the worst day of his life thanks to a disrupted digestive tract and a burro who, for some reason, takes a liking to him.

The plot moves quickly and kept me wondering what could possibly happen to make the lives of these characters any worse than they already were. There were two political rants in the book that threw me off my reading pace, but the rest of the time I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Read this book if you love twisting plots and surprise endings, but settle in and prepare yourself to put The Geronimo Breach down with great reluctance if you can't finish it in one go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Home Run for Blake 20 May 2012
By The Kindle Book Review TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
In "The Geronimo Breach," a thriller involving the Middle East, Latin America, drugs, diplomacy, international deception and so forth, popular Indie author Russell Blake has gone out on a limb while still spinning an irresistible tale. The plot doesn't end up where the reader thinks it will, the author is unsparing in his piling on of corruption and evil doing, and perhaps most of all, he has created a protagonist, Al Ross, that was intentionally created to be next to impossible to like. Perhaps it says more about what readers have come to expect--or take for granted, really--that Al is actually like any number of people one encounters in life. His dubiousness as a hero stems from extremely common character traits in the real world. Readers unwilling to accept Al as protagonist may also be afraid to look in the mirror. I think that Blake was doing more than challenging the reader's stereotypes about heroes in creating Al. I think he also was trying to show how, in today's world, virtually anybody could find themselves in the midst of corruption on a major scale. For me, this made Al actually more effective as a hero, because if he could have to deal with all this so could anyone.

Many readers are already familiar with Blake's gift for the written word: his economy of style, his impeccable timing, his gift for characterization, and--underrated, I think--his sense of humor. But I'll mention them again anyway. He is, and I choose my words carefully, a sadistically good writer. And apparently many are willing to surrender themselves to the many deliciously thorny places he takes them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and funny. 26 Sep 2012

I read this book some months ago and loved it. It was nothing like I thought - the description was, `fast paced action...'. There are moments of galloping pace in the book and there are times when it slows down and you get to know the characters.

I loved the lead guy. It took a while to get to know him. At the start of the book I found him annoying, but as the book went on our `anti hero' was a real asset to the story. It takes a long time to understand why he is the way that he is and learning more about him adds a lot of believability and plausibility to him.

The action is indeed fast and furious. There are some twists and turns along the way to keep you turning the pages and the unpredictable way the author deals with some of his characters means you can never guess what will happen to them.

So, what's the story about? Well, you have to read right up to the very end to find out. I never guessed it, although I'm sure some did, and when I put the book down it was enough to make me stop and think. It could almost be true...

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended 4 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The first three chapters introduce us to our main characters; Albert `Al' Ross, a drunken, gambling, womanizer working for the State Department in Panama: Ernesto, The Cook, a Columbian working in Panama: and Sam Wakefield, also State Department based in Panama. The hero of our story is Al and he is a very unlikely hero. A drunk who smokes too much, weighs too much, and doesn't know a good thing when he sees it. You will find that it is hard to like him.

Ernesto loses his job, leaving with something that does not belong to him. He soon comes to regret taking it and then needs to get out of town in a hurry. Enter Al, who moonlights in the freelance transportation business courtesy of his diplomatic passport.

Things go from bad to worse to really bad.

The book is written in an entertaining style which is very amusing but never over-the-top or too much. I had trouble putting this book down. The Kindle formatting was excellent. The writing was excellent.

If you want to feel what it is like to be trekking through one of the most dangerous parts of the world without actually getting bitten yourself, get this book. Highly recommended.

(One note: the story ends at 87% on the Kindle because of two book excerpts.)

I read the Kindle edition (Manana Publishing, August 2011, 271p) which I downloaded for free during a promotion.

I liked the non-traditional non-hero character.
