Product Description

Depicts the grim struggle between capital and labour in a coalfield in northern France. Yet through the blackness of this picture, humanity is constantly apparent, and the final impression is one of compassion and hope for the future, not only of organized labour, but also of man.

I downloaded this book shortly after receiving my Kindle. I read this book when I was a student in France and I must admit it is a great piece of work. However, even at the risk of being qualified as a pedantic, I really was disappointed finding that the Kindle version has omitted all the accents, which are probably the biggest difficulty for foreigners who wish to master a foreign language. It feels like the whole text has been copied on a QWERTY keyboard, and the person who did it did not bother respecting the language. Being French, I do not mind so much, however reading the Kindle version feels like eating a great piece of cheese without a good glass of red wine.

I originally downloaded the free version from Project Gutenburg, but had to abandon it after one chapter, the 1894 Havelock Ellis translation felt awkward and the stunning imagery was getting stomped on by the dated sentence structure. I immediately bought the Roger Pearson (Penguin Classics) translation, and didn't look back. It flows so naturally and transparently that the full impact of Zola's work comes through unimpeded. The Kindle version has links on archaic or mining-specific terms to a glossary. A stunning novel, and feels strangely relevant today.

A superb tale, written by a master craftsman, whose realistic yet poetical descriptions never fail to capture the reader's imagination and interest. One of the greatest novels ever written about the harshness of life in the mining community of northern France and the personal tragedies unfolding there.
