Having browsed a number of travel books for Germany prior to a recent holiday, it was a relief to find that the 'Green Guide' was still available, updated from my existing, well-used 1993 edition. In contrast to it's competitors, this guide presents information in a clear, straightforward way with towns/cities listed alphabetically and sights rated using a simple star-system. Too often the other guides seemed to fill pages with glossy photos at the expense of providing useful information about, for example, the opening times and prices of important museums and art galleries. A noteworthy addition to the current edition, compared to my old one, is the inclusion of suggested hotels and restaurants: one of the better features of other publishers' travel guides. In summary, it's good to see that the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle is alive and well in this corner of the travel industry.

Old reliable green guide - updated for the 21st century 10 May 2009
By E. Darcy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I buy a lot of guidebooks, but when it comes down to deciding which to take on my travels, the trusty green guide is the only one that makes it into my suitcase. I have used these guides for years, and have always found them reliable and accurate. Their star system is on target with my own interests and their city maps are the clearest and most detailed of any I have ever found in any guidebook - worth the price of the book alone.

If you're traveling through a certain area of Germany, it's easy to find out what the important sights are: simply consult the "Principal Sights" map inside the back cover; there you will see all the place names of touristic interest along with their star ratings of 'highly recommended,' 'recommended,' or 'interesting'; for more information, just find the place in the alphabetical listings.

I haven't used the short sections listing hotel and restaurant recommendation, so I cannot comment on them; However, if they are linked to the recommendations of the famous Michelin red guide, I presume they are excellent. The primary purpose of the green guide to Germany is to describe the places, so the hotel and restaurant recommendations are not extensive.

My one problem with the green guide to Germany: since the guide just came out, why doesn't it list anything regarding the new exhibits at the Documentation Center in Nuremburg, former site of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds? And are there any other omissions?

Green Germany Guide good referrence 10 Jun 2010

Good information. Good for research. Not grouped geographically, i.e. all cites are in alpha order so you need to know the name of the town or look at the tiny map in the back. Since books are pretty heavy and you can't carry them all I'll probably bring the D&K Germany when I go.

GOOD EXCEPT PICUTRES 4 Aug 2009
By Enrique Bozzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Michelin guides are good, I have a whole collection of them and have rendered good service.
Now then, I think they are obsolete in view of guides which are a lot more visually appealing as for example DK and Frommer's, and much easier to read, since Michelin's print is very, very small. The quality of the paper (rather newsprint)and the lack of appealing pictures are also against Michelin regarding the more modern designs as the ones mentioned.
