First developed in the Rhineland at the end of the 13th century, fully fused stoneware is a hard, non-porous ceramic, ideal for domerstic use. Heavily exported, its forms and ornamet became increasingly sophisticated from the Renaissance on, as the ware ceased to be made primarily as a utilitarian comodity. German stoneware provides an essential framework for chronology and social interpretations on archaeological sites from Britain and the continent to North America and beyond.
