Book Description

24 Jun 1976 Parallel Text

The eight stories in this volume offer a varied and representative collection of twentieth century German authors from a range of political and cultural backgrounds. Styles include the non-fictional manner of Kluge's montage technique and the contrasting classical storytelling of Penzoldt.

With reading notes and parallel texts in German and English, this anthology is valuable to the German student of English as well as the English student of German. Reflecting trends in German literature, the stories have been selected for their quality as well as their readability, and will enhance the appreciation of both languages.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a Parallel Text! 11 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unlike the paper version, which has German and English side by side, page by page, the Kindle version presents the whole of the short story in German, then the English. I consider this to be sequential not parallel and was very disappointed with this layout. I like to read a sentence or two in German, then check my understanding with the translation - impossible with the Kindle version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Using both sides of the brain 11 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Learning a language uses both sides of the brain and I need to do that as have forgotten half I learnt! I read the German and try not to look at the English but I fail miserably at times. Even so, I am progressing be it at a snail's pace!

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoayble way of improving your German 5 Nov 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As an intermediate learner of German, I have found the book very useful in that it provides parallel translation as you go (the left page is in German and the right one in English). The translation is superb. The selected stories are finest examples of the contemporary German literature, Let the book carry you away and polish your German at the same time! :o)

This ebook is worthless for Kindle users.

There are many options to make this an useful book for Kindle owners, but the solution from Amazon is the worst possible one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for getting comfortable with written German. 15 Aug 2008
By Trish - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This little book is a collection of charming short stories. One can either read them or study them closely to enlarge vocabulary and learn to understand grammer. It is also a good exercise in the use of synonyms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Tool for German Students 14 Mar 2013
By Jinna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Parallel texts are a good tool for building foreign language skills. This book is the second level with more complex language usage than Level One. That is not to say this book is for beginning language students as I believe it is better suited to the advanced beginner or intermediate learner. German text is on the left with the corresponding English text on the right. The translations are not word for word, rather, the approximate equivalent in English. But they do help the reader "see German in action" so to speak, which is helpful with a grammar-driven language such as Deutsch.
