Product Description

Product Description
This anthology of German verse in English translation covers a period that includes perhaps two-thirds of the superlative poets of the German language. Here are 147 poems representing 27 poets from Matthias Claudius to Friedrich Nietzsche. The selection is representative, including both the universally known (Goethe, Schiller, Holderlin) and the less familiar (Brentano, Droste-Hulshoff, Holty, Hebbel, Storm). Among the translations are classics by Coleridge, Longfellow, and the Irish poet James Mangan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good selection of German verse, 9 Jan 2009
This book is an excellent introduction to the period when most of the best German poetry was written. It is a dual-language book, with the German lines on the left hand page and their English translations on the right. Curiously, this rather important fact is not mentioned on the book's blurb or in any marketing material I have seen relating to it.

Many of the English translations are by writers who are recognised poets in their own right. This is both good and bad. On the one hand, it does tend to give the translations more inherent literary quality than is usually found in a translation. On the other, to achieve this high literary quality, the translations sometimes depart from the original German text in minor ways in order to facilitate a rhyme or the like.

If you are broadly capable of reading the German, you primarily want a faithful translation to help you over the occasional verbal hump. It can therefore sometimes be irritating to see that the English does not correspond.

For this reason, if you are only going to buy one Dual-language book of German poetry, I would probably recommend Stanley Appelbaum's "Great German Poems of the Romantic Era" instead, although there is almost no overlap in their selection of verse if you wanted to buy both.
