The reason I wrote this book
It was solely to trace the fate of one person who had unaccountably disappeared during the Second World War that I started my researches into the Special Operations Executive - the sabotage organization which Winson Churchill himself had set up immediately after the fall of France in 1940 to 'set Europe ablaze'.

"Enquiry into the fate of this one girl, Noor Inayat Khan, who had served in SOE under the code-name 'Madeleine', brought me to the discovery of dark mysteries, nothing of which had so far appeared in the glossy success stories published after the end of the war. From wooden horses to dazzlingly successful secret agents we had duped the Germans all the way down the line, so it was said . . which, I was to discover, wasn't entirely true.

"Frequently, by gross ineptitude on the part of those directing operations from London - or by treachery and betrayal - the Germans had been able to dupe us. For nearly three whole years they had been able to dupe us. And many cruel deaths had been the result.

"The dark mysteries which I discovered and exposed, layer after layer, in successive books about the SOE provoked questions in Parliament, Government investigation and more than one coat of whitewash, but the truth remains.

"And all of that truth which - so far - I have been able to uncover is here."

Reading this brilliant work leaves one with the mixed feelings of horror, shame and embarrassment.
Ms. Fullers' work examines honour and courage corrupted by self interest, deceipt and betrayal.
Sanctity and trust are reduced to blasphemy. The public is left with the terminal deception of cinema theatrics and government myth.
Ms. Fuller offers an alternative to the official lie.

The indelible image of the "Agent" is one who is working for the Government under extreme pressure and doing it all under the enemy's nose without them realsing. Sadly this was certainly not true. Jean Overton Fuller proves herself to be true to her friend, informing the public of what it really was like, the opposition all the way and the crumbling realisation that it was all a facade. The bravery is clear and Fuller's sensitivity of this produces tears. They were so brave, but they were wise lambs fed to the lions who were just as much at home as they were abroad.
