Book Description

21 Jun 2012
For half a century German warship camouflage has been something of a mystery for warship enthusiasts and modelmakers. The widespread destruction of naval archives at the end of the war left little documentation, while the ad hoc application of unofficial schemes in theatres like Norway led to many variegated and frequently altered patterns. This book, therefore, is based on close scrutiny of all available photos, including many only recently discovered, collated with the first-hand testimony of Kriegsmarine survivors. After decades of study, the authors are the world s leading experts, and their work challenges many accepted views, while greatly expanding the general understanding of the subject. The fruits of their labours are presented in the form of exquisite colour illustrations of every scheme and variation for which evidence is available. For major ships these are sometimes only months apart, giving as complete a representation of their camouflage history as possible. There are no speculative views if, for example, only the starboard side is known, there is no attempt to reconstruct a port side so all information is reliable. This volume covers destroyers and all larger ships during the early war years, with a second part devoted to 1942-45 planned for completion in 2013. For warship enthusiasts its publication will be a major event, and it is certain to become the standard reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference 7 July 2012
By Mr. D. W. Manley VINE™ VOICE
Asmussen and Leon are to be congratulated for this most comprehensive publication. Over 190 pages crammed with invaluable information, photographs and colour plates, detailing the changes in camouflage schemes and tactical markings carried by all of the Kriegsmarine's major surface ships from cruisers upwards, and a selection of destroyer schemes (in particular those used during the invasion of Norway). The various pictures and paintings are supported by an excellent text that provides more detail. The book is capped off with a few pages on seaplane markings. I can't wait for volume 2!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb 13 Aug 2012

The book covers all the big ships in the pre-war to early-war period with very detailed and accurate colour drawings and the description strictly focuses on camoflage so a bit of pre-study is recommended. Each ship has all it's known appearance variants described from the mentioned period, even if the changes are relatively minor. Light cruisers are covered in detail as well, only the destroyer part is shortened a bit (with ships from various classes covered in one chapter).

Been a visitor for John's site for a long time and knew some of the drawings appearing in the book, however the printed format together with the added information and pictures make this an excellent book and a very much needed one. The format is something like a 16:9 ratio, so pretty well suited for long drawings, although for my taste it could be a bit larger, knowing how detailed the original digital drawings are.

I can only recommend it for all Kriegsmarine fans, modellers especially and even for those who just like pretty side drawings of warships (the quality of line drawings are waay above the Breyer book's level, so even for those who own that book should think about investing into this one). I can'T get enough of it and can hardly wait for the 2nd volume. Hopefully the authors will consider to do a similar series on the Royal Navy and USN at least!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book. 6 Jan 2013

Physically this book is well put together, good quality "build", the font is nicely sized and blends well with the content and if books might be called attractive and well proportioned, it is clear o see that a great deal of thought has gone into the production and presentation of this project.
What do you get for your money - you get an excellent guide to the colour schemes adapted and employed by the Kriegsmarine for all its ships from "Bismarck" class down to Destroyers from 1939-1941.This might seem like something you can pick up from "other books" but when you see the subject set out and detailed there is so much you will miss that the true value of this book will become apparent.
The book itself is a collection of first class photographs (colour and black and white) backed up by a series of excellent (coloured) line drawings each is really finely detailed showing the changing face of each ship between 1939-41 this brings out the major strength of the book - attention to detail it is simply very hard to fault it.
The text is very informative and links very well to the diagrams and photographs, I was delighted to see that the same much used images are not repeated- certainly to me a lot of these photos are new and refreshing and a lot of the smaller detail often missed comes out - photos are sharp clear and again the authors have done a fantastic job.
This is one of a series of books which will I trust be published in due course and on the basis of this first volume I will have no hesitation in buying the next, really feel I have bought a book which can tell me something about an aspect of the Kgm which I until now "accepted" rather than understood.
I would give this 10/10, nothing less.
