Chapter one gives a very brief history of Germany, nothing more than you would get from a good encyclopedia entry. The second chapter covers the development of the German language. The next few chapters are the "culture" part of the title: literature and philosophy, art and architecture and music. Then come several chapters covering life in Germany: traditions and folklore, creativity and achievements (includes food and the media), politics, living (includes schooling and housing), and work and play.

The title implies coverage of life in Germany, German language and German culture. The book actually concentrates on life and culture with very little on the German language. I read this book as preparation to taking evening classes in beginners' German, hoping that it would give me some insight into life in Germany, which I had never visited. The book only partly succeeded and I thought it could have been more in-depth. A useful taster but not really a good guide to daily life in Germany.

Excellent overview! 19 Dec 2001
By Richard A. Weaver - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
For the price, this is a really good introduction to Germany today.

There are three main sections - the first is "The Making of Germany", and sketches the historical development of Germany and the German language. The second is "Creative Germany", and outlines the contributions made by Germans in the fields of art, music, literature, philosophy, etc. The last is "Living in Germany Now", and deals with daily life, political structure, administrative units, daily life, education, and more.

It does not presuppose any prior knowledge, and covers a lot of territory, some areas sketchily, others in more detail.
As an introduction to the country and the culture, it's very well done.

Highly recommended!
