Product Description

Synopsis

Who doesn't want to? You know the problem yourself: You can understand a little German, but can only form the most basic of sentences, let alone take active part in a German conversation. You have learned the vocabulary but can't remember it in the heat of the moment. You are not confident in the language. This new, improved and reworked CD language course is exactly the thing for you. You can learn practically and without any problems, with authentic dialogues in modern German as it is spoken at bank counters, in every cafe or in the family. At the start of each chapter you will hear a jingle which will introduce the new chapter. This is designed on the pedagogical basis of helping the learner to concentrate and bring the concentration to bear on the topic in hand. Then the most important figures of speech in the chapter will be spoken aloud in German. You can repeat and learn. Thus you will have already learned the vocabulary for the exercises. You also have the opportunity to do the same with the dialogues and to check your pronunciation. The dialogues revolve around daily and typical scenes which are to be met with on holiday or on business.

There follow detailed exercises dealing with the dialogue and which can be used to improve your vocabulary and grammar skills according to the latest German usage. Through the variety of the short exercises, the concentration is focussed on the most important parts. In the illustrated accompanying book you can read everything which is spoken on the CDs. Additionally the various grammatical points are explained clearly in English. There is also an additional part dealing with aspects of life and customs in France and how best to cope verbally in such situations. Plus there is the opportunity to correct the written exercises. Thanks to the solutions printed at the back of the book, you can mark the exercises yourself. A German-English vocabulary section and a list of verbs complete the book.

With a holiday in Austria coming up and my school girl German rather rusty after 'some' years with no practice, I figured I should do something about it rather than risk the whole 'shouty English person abroad' scenario. This course is pitched absolutely perfectly. It assumes a level of understanding including pronunciation of various letter groups but starts with the basic 'Hello, how are you, nice to meet you' situations before moving on to more complicated conversational scenarios. There is lots of chance to listen and repeat and the workbook backs up the CD learning giving you the opportunity to read what you're saying so that, in restaurants for instance, words will look familiar. I've been playing this in the car and my children are picking up some phrases too which is bound to buy us a few brownie points while we're away!

The book is good. The CDs are annoying - there seem to be no title or track names to guide you and all the audio is in german so finding the appropriate audio track takes time unless you follow the exact order of the book.
Works best as a course done at home with book in hand and CDs playback controls in the other. It has not worked for me in the car. I have brought another CD course for practicing in the car.

Received the book but no CD so no way of knowing how to do the correct pronouncement, there for not much use as I have no idea if what I'm doing is correct
