Product Description

Review

Monumental and deeply impressive (Times Higher Education SupplementThe range and depth of his scholarship are tremendously impressive ... it is a pleasure to read ... This is historical writing of the first order. )

Product Description

Now available in paperback, this is a uniquely authoritative study of Germany from the mid-eighteenth century to the formation of the Bismarckian Reich. James J. Sheehan gives an extensive account of social and cultural, as well as political developments, and shows that the creation of a Prussian-led nation-state should not be seen as `natural' or inevitable. He shows how German history in this period was shaped by three separable yet closely linked developments: the rise of sovereign territorial states, the expansion of economic activity and social mobility, and the emergence of a literary culture.

A very comprehensive survey of the German-speaking countries 6 July 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The author covers not only the political history of Central Europe, but also the cultural and literary developments. The political history of Central Europe under the Holy Roman Empire and then the German Confederation is tremendously complex, given the number of autonomous entities involved. The author has done an excellent job of tracing political developments as linearly as possible without getting bogged down in a morass of details. Even though the book runs to nine hundred pages, it is not lengthy in view of the author's purpose. For anyone wondering just what Germany was--and was like--prior to the rise of the Second Reich, this is an excellent resource.

great read! 24 Dec 2011
By T. E. Leonard - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A compelling narrative for those who want to better understand the German people, from the egalitarian fervor unleashed by the French Revolution to the Franco Prussian War. Indeed it was an era which saw the birth pangs of the modern German nation state, with Bismarck as its less than democratic mistro.

very dense, very technical 29 Mar 2011

This 900 page book covers a period of less than 100 years of German history. I think it was written for experts who teach German history at the college level. I was mainly interested in learning exactly how average, everyday people lived in Germany during those years of 1770 to 1866...I am hoping to write a book about the everyday lives of my German American ancestors. The book does not concentrate on this everyday life material. But it is rich in statistics that show how agriculture was changing and the German lands at that time.
I found it an effort, but a worthwhile effort to plow through and I took some 60 pages of word-processed notes on all the detailed developments, but many will find this a little too dense and too technical.
