FUNK FIEBER Vol 2 16 Oct 2009
By D.L.J.Mann TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Rare or not, and despite it's German origins, Funk Fieber Vol 2 can barely contain the funk. The speakers are literally shaking as I write. High Snobiety by Siegfried Schwab - he of Vampyros Lesbos, was originally released on a rare library album and makes you wonder what else is in the vault. Other library fare includes tracks by the legendary Roland Kovac, Eric Thoener and best of all Peter Thomas who closes the album out with a chilled out groove. But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Malcolm Lock's take on The Wailer's 'Get Up Stand Up' is seriously funky, and with a the band made up of German funkers like Dieter Reith and Lock's pals from Trinidad, is it surprising? The 1:44 of Mandrake by Orchestra & chorus of Les Humphries will have you begging for more. Hard to believe Lift recorded Wenn behind the iron curtain - backed by snarling guitars, pounding percussion and jazzy trumpet, lead singer, Christiane Ufholz whose voice could have ripped a hole in the Berlin Wall, cajoles the listener into making a change. Joy Fleming, the only German singer to have recorded for Stax, gives Otis Redding's Respect a re-write by substituting Respect with Geld (money). True, she ain't no Aretha, but her gutsy reading and top knotch backing band demands your respect. From the GDR comes the hard funk, free form jazzer Der Loverkaufer by Panta Rhei - features some dazzling tenor saxaphone that threatens to derail the rest of the band but manages to reign itself back in at the last minute. If there's a weak track here then it's the jazzy Wenn's Draussen Grun Wird by Manfred Krug - it's not bad just doesn't belong. And the cover of Bobby Helm's Sunny by the Jochen Brauer Sextett doesn't exactly set the ears on fire though to be fair it improves torwards the end. The fantastically groovy funk of 'Testify' by Memphis Black has I'm certain been comped before, but for those who have not heard it, it's one of the comp's highlights and you'll love it. If not, then what are you doing here?

Sleeve notes are good, if not a tad over enthusiastic. Cover art is wrong but if you're gonna stick a girl from another period on your cover, let it be her.

Highly recommended!

Funky Funky Germany! 24 Nov 2008
Format:Audio CD
"Funky funky tunes from 1970s Germany -- sound library material and ultra rare singles by German pop, easy listening, and jazzy groovers moonlighting in the funk sound -- and hitting it! A few of the tracks head for the gritty, howling JB variety, but more roll with the fuller arrangements and pulpy cheer of the soundtracky funk groove. It includes some English language covers of funky soul hits, instrumental organ jams, percussion heavy horn funk, and more -- a full funky palette -- much of it never commercially available until now! Compiler Roman Kumutat does a fantastic job here, with a few notes on each track. We're already itching for Volume 2! 18 tracks on the CD: "Night Clipper" by Orchestra Gus Brendel, "Gang Bang" by Messengers, "Dark Alley" by Ken Aldin, "Gate One" by SWF Orchestra Rolf Hans-Mueller, "Tuesday" by Die Melon Men, "Summertime" by Klaus Wunderlich, "La Avispa" by Rainbow Orchestra, "Uptown" by Orchestra Heinz Kiessling, "Watermelon Man" by Dave Kamien Division, "Kleiner Mann" by Sandra Haas and more."
