A Thrilling/Disturbing Theatre Of The Imagination 18 Oct 2010
By James S. Eisenberg - Published on Amazon.com
Concert melodramas can be very exciting. Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW and Nono's ROMANCE DE LA GUARDIA CIVIL ESPANOLA come most immediately to mind. But this Gerhard piece, based on Camus, is one of the very best. It is a gripping theater of the imagination. The combination of narration and sometimes violent choral and orchestral sounds is gripping from beginning to end.
Alec McCowan is a superb narrator, just the right combination of control and ham !
Antal Dorati paces the score beautifully and secures brilliant playing from the National Symphony Orchestra, while the chorus seems to be having the time of their lives with the broadly theatrical choral speaking. (There is another less successful performance on the Harmonia Mundi label.)
The sound recording is excellent and there is a full text.
The disc is short, and it is a pity some filler couldn't be found.
Gerhard's The Plague 21 Dec 2011

Roberto Gerhard's dramatic cantata is based on Albert Camus's novel. I happen to feel that this novel is one of the top ten literary works of the 20th Century. I am also happy to report that Gerhard did justice to the existential themes of the novel in his cantata. I have the LP which I purchased long ago. The CD transfer is outstanding. It belongs in every serious collection of modern music.
