Roberto Gerhard is a dead composer, both literally and in terms of his reputation. The kind of high modernist style he worked in has fallen out of favour, and is almost never to be heard in concert halls these days. This is a great shame: Gerhard was a composer of powerful, often visceral music, and it's a great pity that fashion and prejudice have conspired to cast him to the margins. So full credit is due to Matthias Bamert and the BBC Symphony Orchestra for producing the series of recordings of which this is one. Unfortunately I can't wholeheartedly recommend the disc; while there's nothing particularly wrong with the performance, it seems strangely lifeless and noncommittal. The recording the same orchestra made with Norman del Mar in the 60s of the Concerto for Orchestra is much better, with a palpable sense of excitement and a determination to communicate the power of the score. If you can track down a copy of that LP, you're in for a treat. But as it's unlikely to be rereleased any time soon, this current recording will probably have to suffice.
