Product Description

Songlines magazine, April/May 2008 (issue #51)

This is Mongolian ensemble Egschiglen's fifth album and the third to feature Amartuwshin Baasandorj's fine khöömii throat singing. Most of the traditional melodies and songs here are arranged by horse-head fiddle players Tumenbayar Migdorj and Tumursaikhan Janlav, who were trained at the Conservatoire of Ulaanbaatar. The band is completed by Sarangerel Tserevsamba's hammered dulcimer, Uuganbaatar Tsend-Ochir's two-string double-bass and Batbold Wandansenge's percussion, with everyone singing examples of songs, such as urtyn duu (long), bogino duu (short) or magtaal (praise).
All the musicians have exceptional playing techniques. The arrangements are slick, in a chamber orchestra style influenced by the Soviet romantic classical music that was drilled into all professional musicians during the Communist period right up until the early 90s, when Egschiglen was founded. However, the songs - concerning the beauty of the landscape, horses, homeland, wrestling, parting, animism, Buddhism, and historic and mythical people - are predominantly from traditional sources.
Baasandorj comes from Chandman District in Western Mongolia, arguably the birthplace of khöömii. However the influence of khöömei from Tuva can be heard in the low khargiraa (sub-harmonic) style, particularly on their renamed version of Huun-Huur-Tu's classic `Kungurei'. Amazing, non-verbal high melodic overtones feature on half a dozen cuts. His mastery enables him to sing the dizzyingly heights of the 16th harmonic, and to adapt to unfamiliar musical settings. The one drawback is that the intricacies of his singing can get lost in some of the overly dense arrangements. But, with fine production and good liner notes, Gereg is an excellent way to delve into the subtle delights of Mongolian vocal music.

difficult to express my excitment about a new Egshiglen album.
Zazal & Arc's The Sounds Of Mongolia are quite simply some of my most treasured CD's irrespective of genre or style. the nucleus fault with this album is that it's over-produced. it's far to burnished & clean with no ambience unlike their previous expeditions. for such a natural, organic & nature-descriptional music/band this is very much to their/the CD's detriment. the other problem is half the tracks are dud's whereas almost every track on Zazal & TSOM were consistently magnificent. STILL lets be under no illusions that this CD provides some astonishingly beautiful, diverse & richly evocative splendour as only this incredible assemble can deliver. Meeneg, Buyan Hishig Daa Lam, Shigshirgiin Ai are all fantastical songs & Nutgiin Zamd harnesses such beauty you could almost cry as you are inundated with pristine images of rolling grasslands & mountain ranges. regardless of the production & dearth of blidingly good songs Gereg is still a completely indespensible album for anybody into any form of World music or Global Folk but if you are new to the sensational Egschiglen i would recommend The Sounds Of Mongolia & Zazal first. the only other detraction is that two of the groups members are now absent?!?! as there aforementioned albums have brought me so much delight it feels a real shame to have these participants excluded for whatever the reason was.
