Excellent item, the fire starter works perfectly. Its easily stored so no components go missing. It doesn't take long to get the technique perfected as the way it is designed makes it really easy to handle, there is 1 cotton wool ball in a storage compartment within the product but we found the fluff you get out of a tumble dryer filter works great. My boyfriend reverted back to caveman mode when he opened it at xmas, every tiny bit of rubbish is now an excuse to make fire!!!!

Just love this fire starter. Well designed, robust and clever waterproof storage space for cotton wool / tinder! Emergency whistle is a nice touch too. All works well, like most of Bear Grylls (Gerber) products.

You need to practise a bit, if you've never used one before, to get the hang of the technique. Also it comes with a black protective coating on the "flint." But just twist/scrape away and you'll be burning things before too long!

Remember - you need LOADS of tinder, LOADS of kindling, and quite a lot of wood, to make a decent fire! Prep, prep, prep, or else the fire you start will go out v. quickly.

My only real complaint is that I can't make it spark as powerfully as when Mr Grylls uses his firestarter on the TV! Need to practice more! Oh well!

Totally happy with this great value product. Had me lighting fires in no time - I used lint from my tumble dryer filter for tinder. Produces loads of sparks when you get the technique (you just have to do a few strokes when you first use it to get through the protective coating). I was so impressed, I went and bought another three units for my friends. There's something innate in humans that gives them satisfaction when creating fire - this gave me that satisfaction. Brilliant value, sturdy and well engineered.

Awesome and well designed little tool. it may be a little more expensive than some others on the market but i find this a lot better to use.
Gives a good spark even on the first strike with the coating still on. (started a fire today using dried grass after the first 2 strokes). Is also very easy to place the spark right where it is wanted.
Is comfortable to use by having the striker and rod both having chunky handles so even wet cold hands will be able to get a fire started. Yes the storage area with this is pretty small but to be honest if you need tinder to get a fire started you can replenish this small little stash on the go.
Only takes one spark to get a fire started and this more than delivers, anyone having problems needs to take a closer look at their technique
I can't see anybody not being able to use this easily.

What a great little piece of kit. I will probably never need it, but I find it deeply reassuring that in the event of a zombie apocalypse or similar event I now have the equipment to briefly make fire independent of civilisation's complex infrastructure. I say briefly because although an excellent fire-starter it seems to have limited scope as a weapon, unless the attackers are scarecrows in the depths of summer I suppose.

Buy one, and feel complete.

this is a great piece of equipment! its is extremely water tight and works really well. at first it will take a few goes to get it started but once the protective layer has been removed it makes tones of sparks. the sparks are great for starting a fire and i would seriously recommend this to any camper, hiker and if you go to scouts. the tinder compartment works really well and is very water tight. overall a great piece o kit!!

This product is not all hype, it really does work incredibly well, i'm a complete amateur in wilderness survival but with a few strikes of this fire starter I had a fire going in 20 seconds, an amazing bit of kit, worth the money
