Gerber Crucial Black Model Review 25 Jun. 2012

Hello, this is my first product review so please bear with me.

I recently purchased the Gerber Crucial, black model and I thought to share my opinion of it. First, let me say that this was exactly what I was looking for in a multi-tool. I work in the field as an ems provider and this tool is very useful and easy to use. I did quite a lot of homework before i bought this tool and I am glad that I went with it. The Crucial comes in several models - i chose the black because 1: It had the tools that made the most sense to me, and 2: It looked the coolest.

I wanted a multi-tool that had the tools i needed for everyday fieldwork on the ambulance and in the community, without a bunch of stuff that i wouldn't use. the crucial is just that -Simple and useful. I am a big function over fashion guy so the minimalist design of the crucial appealed to me. It features Needlenose pliars, wirecutters, a knife (with smooth and serrated edges), two screwdrivers (phillips and flathead), and a seatbelt/webbing/cord cutter. that was the kicker for me. i don't find anything wrong with leatherman or gerber tools with lots of different tools, but for everyday use on the ambulance I wanted something that again, got the basics right and cut out the rest.

I have seen reviews of the pliars and knife that said that the pliars were small and weak, and that the knife was not good because it was small and does not have a drop point. Let me say that this is misinformed. The pliars are not meant to be heavy duty, tons of torque, pipe-wrenching jobs. they are designed for precision work. I use them to open the valves on the smaller oxygen tanks that we carry, as well as freeing a bolt on a door to gain access to a patient. the wirecutters are not hardened, but again these are not for heavy duty work. If you need something like that, there are other tools that are better suited. The knife is not designed to be a weapon, but a tool. the placement of the serrations gives it excellent leverage while cutting thick rope, and the smooth edge is perfect for precision cutting. the knife is easily opened one handed, and was spooky sharp right out of the box. the cutter works awesome! razor sharp and effectively cuts anything you use it on.

This tool is functional, compact, lightweight, and affordable. it is limited in it's uses, but if you only need certain things, then it performs well. all the tools can be used without opening the pliars, and the grip is the most comfortable i have found with a multi tool. For a field urban ems provider, this tool is an excellent choice. also, the back finish is durable and looks absolutly badass. Just Sayin'...

Liked it so much I bought another one 22 April 2013

I bought a crucial a while ago. I used it dozens of times a day. I carried it everywhere and used it everywhere. I still have the first one but a years worth of abuse is starting to show. I figure if one of these can make it through the torture i put mine through why not replace it with the same one. only now it comes in black and with a strap cutter.
I recommend this multi-tool to anyone needing a multi-tool

One of the best Multi-tools I have used 25 May 2012
By chili_pep - Published on
Over the years I have been given a few multi-tools. The first one, I do not recal the brand, made me strongly dislike multi-tools. Every time I used it I managed to get the flesh of my hand pinched in the tool...
Go 15+ years later, and I finally have a multi-tool that I often carry with me. This tool is extremely functional for everyday use, and clips nicely into your pocket. From the Knife, pliers, and drivers come in handy very often, and all LOCK in place. The Strap cutter has been used on a couple of occassions and works perfectly when needed. The curved grip fits nicely in the palm of my hand and has never pinched me.
Highly recommend this tool to my friends and family. I may even order the Green Crucial for myself & one for my father.

Recommended but it's hard to find the best small tool. 13 Dec. 2014

I use this often and it sits easily on your belt. I has cut wires and done it's job well for two months.

The only down sides are that it's 5 ounces. Heavy then other small tools.

Made in China unlike others.

And doesn't have a beer opener.

This model is great but the 31-002888 is the same and half the price. 28 Jan. 2015

I'm giving this multi-tool 3 stars not because of the quality but because of the price. The Crucial 8-in-1 Multi-Tool in Black is exactly the same as the Gerber 30-00587 but half the price.

The tool for the price is amazing! Very basic to get you out of trouble of almost any situation when a tool is needed, but then again not for this price. When I called Gerber they said the 31-002888 and the 30-00587 are exactly the same and that they only change the model in the package depending on the retailer, but both are exactly the same.

If you are looking for a basic multi-tool and that is not that expensive this Gerber fits right in.
